Thanks, so you could do a diabetic type apple pie in them,

ABSOLUTELY..

I have made apple pies in mine..

Unsweetened pie apples, some sultanas, soaked in whatever you want to plump them up a bit. (I use cranberry juice coz I like a tart, tart, or use a sweet juice to soften the tartness of the apple)  add sweetener to suit   A little seasoning to suite.  (Cinnamon, nutmeg etc)

Very lightly oil the jaffle iron (or brush on a little melted butter) put the puff pastry in and cook over a relatively low heat.  I would try to aim at about 7 mins both sides.

The puff pastry will not rise as it would in an oven, but it should get crispy..

Yummo

So my further question is:Should I unscrew the handles to heat and oil?

I had a hell of a job to unscrew one of the metal rods with the wooden handles on my Furphy Jaffle iron before I seasoned it. A vice would have been handy, but dont have one, used a plumbers shifter instead.
I scrubbed it in hot water with a bit of dish liquid, dried it then sprayed all over with olive oil, then seasoned it in the house electric oven set at full temp for an hour, along with a cast iron hot plate for a two burner gas stove and three trivets.
One trivet did not like this method and the results were shown at Thora. A Bushking I believe bought on eBay.  Will check on that.

I just did mine over the coals...  Worked fine..  Had I thought about it I would have used the BBQ as it has a hole in the side for the rotisserie..
