I’ve heard that too Derek. It's a great shame to see beautiful old camp ovens abused and devalued in this way. It's also so unnecessary because camp oven legs shouldn’t necessarily preclude a CO's suitability for household use.

Many years ago, I devised a simple adaptor skirt for our wood burning kitchen stove, which allows me to use my fully legged camp ovens for everyday household cooking.

I find this setup very satisfying because at least part of the enjoyment I derive from my CO collection, is through using them for cooking purposes and this adaptor allows me to use them everyday.

I know it sounds eccentric for a person to want to do this, but for a camp oven nut like me, its ABSOLUTE BLISS..... Grin

That 12" Carron from Toowoomba is back on Ebay.

Aart

I will definately make the effort and go and see this pot, the seller has already agreed and I got his phone number. Then will report back to this thread.

I visited Bob today and had the Carron in my hands. In the ebay listing the seller is Toowoomba, I called him and found that he is actually at Gowrie Junction, just over the hill from Kingsthorpe!
The steel band is not a repair. it is an insert which goes all round the inside. The join is riveted. I have never seen anything like it and cannot work out the point.

Bob claimed to have paid $150 for the pot at an auction in Port Arthor 15 years ago and is firm at $200. He also had a Metters and an Albion lids not for sale, and a no make old pot for sale.
He told me that a man from Gowrie Junction bought his other camp ovens and I wondered if this was Hotshins .
This visit was quite an experience as Bob had horded stuff for years and had a shed full of anvils and blacksmithing equipment which he said was also on eBay.

David,

Very strange modification indeed. Would it be possible that the steel band was intended to improve the seal of an ill fitting lid?  Undecided Did the lid appear to sit properly on the pot?

That was the only conclusion I could come to, the lid sits well on the pot.

Another option, maybe that the steel band was intended to seal that chipped section on the lip of the lid

I think vendor is very optimistic with the money he wants for that Carron. Defective pots like that are a real eye saw and can be a pain to use.

A mate of mine recently bought a cheap two legged 12” Metters. I love Metters but I find it a real pain to watch him using this pot because while he is cooking, he is always farting around looking for an appropriate sized rock, stick or log, to prop it up against and of course invariably, the log or rock slips away and the pot flops over and often spills the contents.

I don’t know how he stands it because it drives me to absolute frustration just watching him. If only to maintain my own sanity, I’m seriously considering welding him up some trivets.  Wink

What is Jimna doing with all the legs?

I don't expect he is doing anything with them.  They look like they have been gone a looooooong time.  He is just selling them the way he got them.

Same bloke has a metters 11" that still has the legs on.

I have PM'd this seller several times thru the eBay system, the various pots offered for sale have been sitting in a shed for 25 years, legless or otherwise.  What a find! Spect you noted the Harding offered does not have a Harding lid!
Seller is prickly and the replies are mainly - "Well dont bid on it" which is very informative Roll Eyes
