I bought this BIG heavy Clark & Co No 5 (5 quart) kettle on eBay.

Sender simply placed it in a plastic shopping bag, tied a piece of string around under the handle to make a "waist" and sticky-taped the top above the handle like a ladies hair cruncher.

Then wrote my name/address with a Nicko pen on the bag which has gone through onto the kettle and has branded it.

Amazingly it survived and landed on my front porch in perfect condition yesterday!  Could be a good bluff with Australia Post?
Anybody want to try this with a camp oven?

Can anybody explain why the front of the base is cut away?
Must be a reason.

KD,

The raised rim extending part way around the bottom of the Clark kettle was designed to promote simmering rather than boiling water. This was achieved by the rim elevating the base of the pot slightly to reduce the area which was in direct contact with the hot surface of the stove hob.

In their heyday, these kettles were generally heated by cast iron solid fuel stoves, which were kept fired for long periods of time and a simmering kettle provided an ongoing supply of hot water for various household purposes (very few hot water services or electric urn’s in those days!!!), however if the kettle came to the boil, the contents would soon boil dry, so it was an advantage to have a kettle which would simmer over a broader range of stove hob temperatures than was generally the case with the normal flat bottomed kettle.

In addition, this rim design also made it slightly easier to tilt the kettle forward to decant water.

Thanks for this - too obvious!
