Does anyone have any knowledge of or used the Oztent.  I spent some time talking to these guys at the 4X4 Expo.

Howdy Derek, We have had the RV3 oztent for about 5yrs, Brilliant. The only drawback is that when folded they are roughly 1.8 or2 metres long. No problems with a roofrack though. Also know two other couples personally that have and use Oztents very extensively. One couple have spent over 250 nights and the other about 200. Also very good back up support from the distributors. Can't recommend highly enough.

Regards

I was told that the RV3 is currently the top selling model.

Hi Derek,

We had an Oztent,  I think a child could put it up.

We also had the side walls for the awning & the fly for the back window, if you get one of these tents they are a must if staying anywhere longer then a day of two, they are extremelly handy.

We sold ours because it was not what we were looking for.

Against.

Have to carry on the roof of your vehicle if it rains you get a wet tent, you can get an Ozpod but they are expensive, the tents to my way of thinking are a bit on the heavy side trying to get them off your roof, the Ozpod has little wheels in it that would make this easier.

Fours.

Easy to put up and pull down, even with the fly and walls.

The floor is really great sort of like rubber, think if you got 6" of water through a camp site the inside of your Oztent would still be dry.

They say the Blackwolf Turgo tents are a brillient tent as well, not as long when packed actually half the length of the Oztent but the floor is not as good as the Oztent, personally I would like the Black Wolfe Turbo tent with the Ozpod floor.

Cheers
Kate

We started back on  our camping adventures with an Oztent. It is highly recommended on lots of forums. Yes it does go up fairly quickly, longer than 30 secs if you feel the need to peg it down.  Mostly we have been in areas with strong winds and did need to spend this extra time.

We found it exceptionally heavy to fold tight enough to put into the bag to zip it up and it did not fit into our Troopy or Prado and had to be lifted up onto the roof, something I didnt not enjoy helping with at all.  I would hate to think of one person alone managing it.

We did a commercial 4WD trip to the Tip using Coleman type tents and were impressed with them, we had to put them up and down each night ourselves.

Kev then saw a Coleman going locally and at a good price and we changed to that.   Doesnt take much longer to put up, folds nicely to go in the back of the 4WD.   Roughly same interior size.

I think they have improved the oz tents windows from our older version, but I enjoy much more the window set up in the Coleman as it is placed right height and position for me to enjoy the sunrise.

We easily sold the oztent to a good home and are keeping the Coleman for those times the van is not the best option.

I know everyone has an opinion on just about every thing and here is mine on tents.
The best tent I have ever camped in bar none is the Southern Cross touring tent, peg the four corners and one centre pole and she's up, bet I could do that in under 30 seconds too but I'm never in that sort of hurry. I have camped in torrential downpours and when others were running for home I remained safe & dry.

I don't bother with the synthetic types of tent (dome) they do not fit my type of camping, if you know anyone that camps near an open fire & own one have a look at the roof any sparks no matter how small will burn right through like a hot knife through butter.
Having said that they fit a purpose and suit many campers but not me.

The Southern Cross tent is light and packs down to a square the same size as the roof frame. aprox 700x700 ish.

There are many options with this tent as well.
Derek I'm not trying to put you off the Oztent as they are excellent, just a bit long for me & I don't use roofracks.

Might have one for sale Wink

Hi Skip,

Have to agree with you in regards to Southern Cross tents Skip, we bought one for our youngest son when he was 12 he will be 31 in June.

We got a four man touring tent for him because he was too tall from the bunk beds in the caravan and I thought if he gets any taller I'm in trouble, we put this tent up every year for a month, we have been through really bad storms with one year his tent being the only one standing in the caravan park, did not even have to tighten the tension on it.

I only throw it out Dec 07, 17 months ago at Patango Caravan Park.

I can also say I used to put this tent up on my own 5'5" female, now that is saying something.

Thinking about it now I would pick the Southern Cross tent over the other 2.

Cheers
Kate

Carolyn - what model Coleman did you settle on.  I know from a price comparison you can buy 4 Colemans to 1 Oztent.  Huh
