Hi All, just thought I would share my attempt at making Beirocks.....supposed to be good eaten with BEER Grin

Lil the Beirocks (German) seem very similar to the piroshki (Russian) I make but mine have a simple meat filling. I know any variety of filling can be put in them. The lady who taught me how to make them often used salmon and glass noodles which never appealed to me, not sure what spice she added. She also fried hers but once I found a recipe to bake them I found I had better results with that.

I couldnt get your link to open up to see whats in it but found this one, which I guess is much the same as what you made. This doesnt give the bread recipe but any bread recipe works fine.

I just love the idea of the cabbage, carraway seeds and lemon pepper.

Kez what are the black seeds on the top of yours?

A Senior moment I just realised black sesame seeds

I guess mine are usually snack size and these are meal size. Also I dont use nearly as rich or sweet a dough. I will put what I use in red for comparison.

2 packages yeast

1 packet of yeast

1 cup sugar

1 tablespoon of sugar

1/4 cup water
4-5 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup milk, lukewarm

Milk Powder & warm water

1/2 cup water, lukewarm
1/2 cup shortening

1 Tablespoon oil

2 large eggs

1 egg if I have plenty

I use approximately a golf ball size of dough flattened out to the size of the palm of my hand with a heaped teaspoon of filling for party snack size. On occasion I make larger to the first joint of my fingers with a heaped tablespoon of filling.

I find my brain a funny thing lots I forget the moment I am told, some trivia I never forget Grin

Now I am on yet another diet Shocked

so am having to turn my food dreams to healthy stuff. Funny enough I like that as well as everything else.

Hi Carolyn,

My sister is married to a Russian and his Mother often made Pieroshki (they called 'em Pierogi's) for me.
They were to die for she used Chicken & mashed potatoes + extra bits .
She would somehow plait the pastry closed and then they were fried in some butter.
Didn't know when to stop eating.

Hey David......I used Copha (which is coconut oil).......It is a vegetable shortening and is used a lot in sweet dishes and the breads were sweet!!! Grin

....I'm gunna try Rastas Cheese Damper next Wink

Rastas's Cheesey Damper is a classic!
Do not cut back on any ingredients, particularly the minced garlic! As getting serious about this recipe I went shopping and found this:
"The Food Company Chopped Garlic" 375gms. This is not minced but chopped, and as a previous life as a Chef I would say that this is the best you can get! Try Woolies.

Sadly, at a wedding I think....

Rastas anything put into any of these pastry/bread etc cases could always be simplified and put into Jaffles Cheesy

.

The surrounds, the wine/beer, the company all seem to make everything so much more enjoyable - especially if someone else has to clean up.
