I have just purchases an Aussie spun steel oven.  Always stirfryed and never used an oven camping.  Will the charcoal heat chart work with this oven.  Has anyone used silicone cookware in a camp oven.

G'day & Welcome Jennie

I have recently brought a 15" Aussie Camp Oven, Haven't used it yet. But it is about to have a good run as I'm off to the Gympie Music Muster then onto Fraser Is. for a week.

From all reports I hear you need to control the heat alot more with the spun steel ovens as they will get hot spots easier and also cool down quicker. I reckon you should just hook in and give it a run, that's the best way to find out.

As for the silicone cookware, It will be fine. The Big Fella (TBF) Uses it and it works fine.

Welcome to the forum Jennie.
I'ver never used a spun steel, so I can't help you there.
I do use the silicone cookware.

I have a muffin 6 pack that works quite well.
Also a loaf, but the sides tend to buldge during the baking.
My silicone was vey cheap from one of many discount stores.

My undertanding is that you need to keep the temp well 200C
Most packaging will indicating what the silicone is rated at safely.

Hi Jennie and welcome.

I learnt to cook in a camp oven starting over twenty five years ago with a 12" Bedourie spun steel camp oven.  In fact it was the only camp oven I had for many many years.  You can cook anything in a spun steel oven that you can in a cast iron one however if using coals from a camp fire you do need to tend it a little more as the thin material will lose heat. 

I have found them really good to use with Heat Beads® and still regularly use my Bedourie when doing demos.

Hi Jennie and welcome aboard.  I live across the pond and well to the north of you, so I've not had my hands on spun steel.  & I've been a cast iron person for over 40 years.

Once upon a time I had a teflon coated fry pan.  Then they got questioned for 'connections to things causing cancer'.  What that did was make me leave the teflon behind when I moved.

& I have heard of some silcone coatings being questionned for the same reason in Canada.  I cannot tell if the governments saying 'questionned' are that of the US or of Canada.

That makes me go more for 'natural' for most of my cooking.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know wait 5-minutes and you will find a counter opinion.  Well, like I said, then leave behind when you move.  Or use sparingly.

Enjoy the outdoor cooking.

I own 3 spun stel puppies and heat beads is what I use 90% of the time.
3 up 3 down rule is good.

Just a note that it takes a little getting used too as it heats up way quicker than cast and there fore you cooking time is alot less than normal.

They can be suspect in winds as they cool quickly as well. When using wood coals you need to be very watchfull.

My son and I love to use Bedourie camp ovens, however we very rarely use heat beads and prefer to cook mostly over a camp fire.

No KD,, I kept my word
That was a photo from Hedlow on the Australia day weekend this year.
The loaf shaped has gone to the tip.
Still have the muffin 6 pack..it works fine..

Will purchase a better one for CO cooking.
