Hi All,

I am 51 years young, have 3 daughters and 4 grandkids. I love the outdoors and camp cooking, although I am getting disappointed at not being able to have open fires for my camp ovens in most parks now days.
I have now bought a Cobb cooker, to go with my portable gas bbq etc... but it doesn't feel the same. I want to take the grandkids and show them what it was like in the 'old days' when we could have an open fire, shovel coals under and onto the camp ovens and sit there talking while the food cooked.

I have a Camp O Matic, flip over type hard floor camper, that suits me and my wife but am now thinking of getting something like the Jayco wind-up campers where the beds slide out the ends, just so we can take the little ones with us now and again.

I have done heaps of cooking in camp ovens (cast iron type) and also have a large Bedourie oven to use with heat beads, just to beat the bans on open fires, hahahaha......

I am a retired cop, please don't hold that against me, and have worked in the 'outback' and done many miles out there, near Broken Hill etc....Now work as a nurse looking after quadraplegics, which I find particularly rewarding, even though I only work a couple of hours in the mornings. I am striving to educate myself and have put my name down for some extended training in my field.

I am also lookig for some 'proven' recipes for the Cobb as it's more than likely going to be my main cooking implement.

Don't give up on the cast iron camp ovens ozk, I've just done four weeks on the road thru Vic, SA and the Flinders then back to Sydney thru B.H. and cooked most nights in my C Os. I use a Camp Oven Mate with a LP gas ring if I can't have a wood fire. I'll admit it's getting harder with a lot of camping sites / National Parks banning "solid fuel fires" or the "gathering of firewood" so we bush camp where we can.
A couple of weeks ago we camped on the side of the road at Waiwera west of Broken Hill and it was so cold it froze the water lines in my van, first time that's ever happened to me.
BTW welcome to this site, it's good entertainment both giving and taking !

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd

Welcome Ozkahuna,

There are still plenty of ways to subvert the fire bans and still stay safe and legal...  They may not involve coals but still cook well.

Having said that, cooking in the CO without needing the long handled shovel is sort of like trying to laugh without making a noise...  The thought is there, but it just aint as satisfying.

A furphy, is Australian slang for a rumour, or an erroneous or improbable story.  You would never get anything but the plain honest dinky-di truth here... I promise!!!!  Yup, hand on my heart, promise, true blue, uh-huh true dinks, dead set!!

G'day Ozk,

It's great to have ya on board. Don't give up on your COs, there's plenty of opportunities for bush camping out there and if you want to be a real desperado like me, you may consider using them for everyday household cooking as well.  Cool

Good on ya Aart. I reckon if i was in a job like yours for any length of time, then I would be hankering for retirement too.
