I slipped down to Awoonga Dam (Just west of Gladstone) after work yesterday to chase a few Barra. I did OK, with the only fish landed in the night session. A 94cm barra. I was stoked as this was the first time I have fished here. My mate picked up a 98cm Barra in the early morning.
It's a top spot.

Cheers
Jono

Well done Jono a couple of top fish. Whats that kilo wise?
Will have to put that on my places to go next year. Of to NT for a month at the end of March and have some Barra and deep sea fishing lined up, said to be very good fishing at the end of the wet.

that's a great fish Jono,
I fished Lake Awoonga last year and although fresh water I cleaned up on Mangrove Jack.

Did you get him casting, with bait or on the troll?

Regards Skip

Muzz, I didn't have any scales. But I reckon he would have been all of 12kg.

Skip, Got him casting. All the people I talked to before hand said to run shallow divers, however I couldn't get a touch until I changed to a 10mtr + Diver, then Bang.

Sly was really pi55ed he didn't get one, was quite funny when I swam mine off (I couldn't see any value in killing that beautiful big bugga). Me mate kept his.

Cheers
Jono

Superb place to hold a COG mate. Long way from Darwin though.

We went to "Boynedale Bush Camp". Its right up the back, to the SW of Awoonga Dam where the Boyne River flows into the dam. You head through Calliope and Hit Calliope-Monto Road, only about 25km from Calliope. You come to this camping spot. It has toilet/s? (Pit, I'm guessing), Fire rings, Shady tree or 2, Shaded picnic tables, All Free. Was only about two other campers there.

who's keen for a look & a cook there?

Cheers
Jono

hi mackrelwhisperer
happy easter to u and all I have a question as my beautiful wife and myself don't have a boat is it at all possible to fish awoonga lake from the lake edge. why I asked this is we are thinking of camping there later rthis year and as I said we don't have a boat. the lake looks like it is a beautiful spot. i know by the web sites i have seen of that lake that there is a caravan park there aswell as a bush camp. thanks in advance for any info.

happy cooking
