Had our new camp oven dome arrive today.  Purchased it via Amazon as Camp Chef didn't seem to have them listed.  All's well.

Then I saw where it was made - China - and it got me thinking.......

Raw material for the steel most likely was mined and shipped from West Australia and Queensland. to China.
The diffuser plate was made from rolled steel out of a foundry in China somewhere and sent to a fabrication factory.  From there it was shipped to Utah in the USA.
I order it from Amazon in the USA and it's flown back to Australia.

All for $43.00.........

All that energy, fuel, labour, shipping, packaging and so on......

Is this what they mean by a carbon footprint??????

Hy head is spinning just taking in the scale of operation for one little piece of steel.... Shocked

My mother-in-law fell down a wishing well, I was amazed.       I never knew they worked.

Over 30 "lookers" and not a single response, as in, "that's interesting" or similar....

I will try and get conversation going some other way maybe....

Over on our side of the pond it's called a Dutch Oven Dome.

...

http://www.rvingoutpost.com/specs.php?prodnum=2437&title=Dutch%20Oven%20Dome

That's location at Mrs. Mik's store. with video for item in use.

It serves somewhat the same purpose  as a Camp Oven Mate, but folds down to next to nothing and must be used with adequate room for air around the canvas.

All or almost all Camp Chef products, which this is are made in Asia.  The company HQ and decision making souls are in The States.  In costing out the operations before launching the company they got figures which said 'make in Asia', it costs lots less than in the US, especially for a new operation.

Julie Mik usually does a very good job of sorting out the most economical shipping.

Others here have bought through her.

Cool

Some of us got them (or very similar) free with our Volcano Grills.  Lady Joanella and Jack Parsons used them successfully in all sorts of different ways at Thora.

I used mine to bake pumpkin in the curried pumpkin soup and was very pleased as I could cook pieces that would not have fitted in my 12" CO without chopping smaller.

Be interesting to see how you use yours.

I rarely use our volcano (and campoven) without also using the volcano lid as they call it.  It is now very brown inside, but works a treat.  I must check out if it is better to leave the brown or clean it somehow.  Just don't want to use the wrong thing to clean it and and then ruin it.
At the moment it is over our spun steel oven which contains a lamb roast and veges.

Yep thats a carbon footprint right there OJ but don't worry jules will fix it, at a small cost to you and this fine nation, this is a great site so i shall try not to tarnish it with politics and my views there on.
It does seem insane that something can be sent half way (or further) around the world and still only cost 43 beer coupons.
That aside what does it achieve when you use it? do you or can you use it with coals or beads or both?

I like to keep it simple campoven, fire, beer/port, and the jobs done

Hey Mook,  Juliar ain't gonna fix this, just tax the "biggies" to distribute the wealth (she/they think).

Camp oven Dome was procured to use on a gas fire. We were convinced when we saw Jack's upside down cake at Dimboola.  No fire, just a cheapie LPG stove and a camp oven.  Sold us!
Will be put to use this weekend and I will post pics.  Cake forthcoming.....

That is if everyone here is going to check in from MySwag.org - which is where most people from here seem to be ATM.   Roll Eyes  Erm  -  -  me too..... Embarrassed
