Hi

Just joined this forum, group from a link one of my club members sent to me, very interesting - will need to spend more time in here :-0

Question - Spun metal camp ovens - many people experienced them?
I have one so don't tell me not to buy one but it seems they are not the norm and do require some changes to cooking methods.

The Reason I went with this option is I just have to be different...
OK maybe but also they are much lighter than the cast iron version and weight is everything when travelling as we do.

I have not done a search yet so maybe there is a thread for this so please excuse my lack of searching if this is the case.

Pete welcome along, plenty of opinions here, easy to burn stuff in the spun steel.

Welcome troopiepete.  Be not afraid, there is time and space for both cast and spun steel.  Each requires some understanding and TLC to produce a meal of "note".  Have courage and cook some BONT (burnt offerings no trouble) meals when at home and this will come into play when offering your culinary delights out of the Troopy when off-road.  You have it sorted, right, written down, heat OK, portions correct, all is well.

All tongue in cheek but there is a distinct difference between cast and spun.  Just do a few dishes and at worst you throw it out and try again..... Shocked

If I have the urge to cook on coals or similar I take both cast and spun (because I have the space) but you will learn that spun steel heats up quicker than cast and will not retain heat as well as cast, so the cooking is different.

Enjoy your time here...

cheers...
