Well i got out my 10" Camp Chef yesterday to do a small roast lamb. i placed three fire lighters on the lid with the heat bead chimney on top, half full of heat beads. Before the heat beads where fully alight I heard a strange noise, upon checking it out I discoved that the lid had cracked about 120mm long.  Sad

So can anyone give me any insite as to why this might happen?

I'm sure others can give you better explanations.

But cast iron can be damaged by too rapid changes in temperature.  If you are seasoning it, put the very thin coat of oil on, put it in the oven, and then turn the oven on.   It takes a good 45 minutes to get the seasoning coat.  I leave the oven on at least 1.5 hours.  Turn it off, let it fully cool, and then take the cast iron out of the oven

Likewise don't go put warm cast iron in your freezer.  Yes, you can have a ci loaf pan with a cake in it and freeze that.  The cake will keep the cast iron from freezing too fast.

Cool

Tim

Two possibilities:

1. A manufacturing flaw
2. It was dropped and had a hairline crack before you got it

I doubt very much that doing the chimney on the lid would cause it.

I would return for a replacement.

Cheers

I am with Derek on this, sounds more like a flaw in the casting.

Hi Tim

I'm with Derek and Muzz..
They are a good oven.
I have 4 of them and my latest is the 10"
They are my " go to Camp Oven " almost every time
As for the chimney on top..I do it all the time and with lots of heat.. but never without a meal inside.
Surely Annaconda will replace it..
