Since getting the gas ring burner and camp oven mate a few weeks ago, I have been trying to get up enough courage to actually light the dang thing!  That gas ring thing just looks so - medieval and torturous!

Finally found the gumption to try it on the weekend (with Chief sitting right next to me the whole time) and did some temperature experiments using a couple of oven thermometers to compare the temperatures inside the JCOM and inside the 'lidless' Hillbilly

General rule of thumb is a 50 degree difference,  JCOM at 140c = 190c in the Hillbilly.

This afternoon I made a batch of dough, divided it into two tins and baked one in the JCOM/Hillbilly and the other in the home oven.  It is quite a challenge to tell the difference between the two.

Once the bread was done, I also cooked up a casserole in the JCOM/Hillbilly

All the while gusty wind, thunder and rain raged a few feet away (off the back verandah).
I wouldn't have been allowed to fire up heatbeads in today's weather - even if fire restrictions were over.

So far, Thumbs Up to a handy combination.

Gourmet sausages used to make a lovely casserole perfect for a chilly damp night!
