by far, my fav thing to date, is the 6ltr kettle we bought. It boils water in no time at all, due to it's design. It has an internal place for you to add twigs & sticks. Then an outer ring it sits on, for you to fill with kindeling. Then you light it up, in in around 5 minutes you have boiling water! We usually put it on the campfire, which heats it just as well. Agree totally Trev and like you I enjoy making stuff up. There are many variations, they have been around since Adam and were called a "Benghazi Boiler" you need a piece of steel tube about 200mm dia x 350mm long with an inverted metal funnel to fit soldered inside, put a lid on to keep ash out of your water, handle etc. not a thing of beauty but it works.

Mmmmm might make one up myself.

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd
