Had to use up some left over veggies and lamb shanks were $6.50 a kilo on special so did a stew.

Ingredients
4 lamb shanks
Carrots
Parsnips
Onion
Sweet potato
Salt & pepper
Can tomatoes
Dash of port
Beef cube
Little water

Method
Peel and dice veggies and place all ingredients in a camp oven. Place on heat for two hours. At the end lift the lid to reduce the gravy. For me lamb shanks have to have the meat falling off the bone when cooked.

Great shot of the Heat Beads starting to glow

...

Everything in the pot.  This is a 10" deep Lodge camp oven

...

A nice pot of lamb stew

...

Served with potato and cabbage. HOW'S THAT FOR CAMP OVEN TUCKER

Once upon a time long, long ago lambs shanks were sold as dog bones, $2 would get you half a dozen then they became popular as a roast meal and the price went up accordingly, lately I've seen them around the $10/kilo mark and even more at upmarket butchery's.
Times change.

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd

I remember that too PD.  These were at Coles Yamba. Local butcher at Iluka has them for $10.50.

Cheers

I love the red glow coming from the bottom slots of the chimney - you can almost imagine it's a real camp fire.
Gotta say, lamb shanks are my favourite and yes they must be fall off the bone tender for me too. Such a pity the up market restaurants decided to make a 'specialty' of them and the price went through the roof.

hmm, it will be dinner time in 3 hours... but no, it's friday night and I have to do the mum's taxi thing   Sad

The judge's decision is final... unless the 3rd umpire is called for... or a facebook campaign goes viral !!!

I seem to remember some rather nice roast turkey legs at the last Thora COG
Different, but almost as nice as lamb shanks. Often around $4.00 or $5.00 a kg.
Looove the lamb shanks though, either roasted, soup, stew etc etc etc
If I see the lamb shanks on special I usually get a few for the freezer and 'ron...
