Here is a policy that a moderator of another website I contribute to has in place, and I would like to know what peoples thoughts are??
As a collector and an avid user of ebay I agree with this train of thought and more often than not I think members input on an open web forum and the suggestion of $$$ an item could bring can effect the outcome of an online auction making it hard for people to pick up a piece of cast iron at a decent price. I know many people make this information readily available on this site and I wonder what effect it would have if we chose to adopt the same principle.
Instead of people having this information given to them on a platter they would have to do their own enquiry and search for these items unassisted, making it a more level playing field in my opinion.

Internet Auctions
We do not accepts links or reference numbers to live internet auctions. Other members may have already found the auction & be planning to bid. Bringing a live auction to everyone’s attention may end up pushing the price up. We all have the facility to search ebay etc so please leave it at that. Do not post links to internet auctions in the Reference sections of the site to illustrate examples of a particular lamp. These links will expire & no longer contribute to the site. It is better to ask the sellers permission to use their pictures & offer to give them credit. If you wish to ask for advice on something you have seen on a live auction please send your question via the contact form & we will direct to the member we think best able to help you.
If you wish to post a question or discuss an auction that has ended please post a screenshot of the auction page. This shows the minimum info required if you crop the screenshot.

To some degree I think your right Dave,
However in the over all scheme of things Im not so sure that it makes a huge difference to prices.
Quality collectables of any sort will always attract a premium price on Ebay. Price in most cases will be driven by supply and demand,
You only need to look through a few other categories on ebay to see what I mean,
Try a search for Bundaberg Rum for one, a rare bottle can sell for $5,000, many others reach over $1000,
Wembley Ware and Darbyshire pottery are other examples that spring to mind, Like most of the Camp Ovens we collect, all of the above are considered Aussie Icons by different groups of collectors, in other parts of the world they probably aint worth a cracker.

I have always disagreed with members on this site focusing attention on eBay items, my belief is it pushes the price up but maybe Saltbush is right when he says

Personally what happens on Ebay doesn't interest me...I got stung years ago...and never looked there again.....never bid on any auctions...but I can understand what your suggesting...has there been times on here that this would benefit those that do use these auctions???

Ebay is a public auction site and COCIA forum posts are open to public scrutiny; who knows whether COCIA posts influence Ebay prices or for that matter who cares.

Ebay bidders should only be bidding to a limit that they are prepared to pay.

Furthermore, it is unrealistic for some bidders to expect that items will sell for less than market value, if these items aren't mentioned on a forum like COCIA.

Equally, I don't think it is reasonable to blame forum's for overly inflated prices either. Sky high prices fetched for goods by reckless or stupid bidding practices is the sole responsibility of the bidders concerned.

I'm not a collector so I will limit my comment to generalities.

Recently at a cafe I overheard a conversation between a couple of men regarding how much a second hand car was 'worth' ... one bloke said "Redbook may have the car listed as being worth $500, but the collector who has been trying to get hold of one for a couple of years may be willing to pay $2000 for it ... so what is the real value of the car?"

In the world of collectibles, I don't think it matters if we are talking in COCIA about the item that is available on ebay. If you want it bad enough you WILL outbid the other fellows, no matter what KD, SJ, LG and PD say it is "worth" in the ebay topic. I guess that makes my opinion - shrug, post away!

The judge's decision is final... unless the 3rd umpire is called for... or a facebook campaign goes viral !!!

My issue is the greater audience that lurks in the background and visits the site but does'nt contribute or is not a member. Puting ebay links and making them available on here is just a gift and takes out all the hardwork of people finding things for themselves. People have no more need to search for themselves as they know this site does it for them. Taking this out of the equation in my opinion could certainly effect the outcome of an auction as it lessens the awareness.
I reckon all we are doing is creating unnecessary hype that people, whether they are members of the site or not, certainly listen to.
We are advertising ebay auctions for free extending the viewing audience to another online forum, and to anyone that happens to look at the COCIA site. That is great for the seller, but is it great for that potential bidder that spends time serching for things themselves online. In my experience the more people at a clearing sale the higher the prices fetch. Grin

First up thanks to everyone for your input into this discussion. Many years back I decided that the COCIA Forums would be a place for people to share information on camp oven cooking. It slowly grew from that to include camping, outdoor cooking \and associated outdoor activites and general information.

I never intended and never wanted to impose rules and policies like many other forums. That is why the registration agreement that everyone should read on registering is based around a common sense and family oriented forum. (Copy below for those who have forgotten it)

While I appreciate the concerns I personally do not agree with them as a simple search on eBay for "camp oven" or "cast iron pot" will bring up pretty well all of the links in the thread for "Camp Ovens On Ebay".

I do not want to impose rules and policies on forum members who want to share things. Additionally imposing rules requires enforcing of the rules and that is not what I want to do.
