Hi Jewel, The cheap awnings seem to be the poorer quality ones or basic ones. The dearer ones can have accessories that can be added to turn the awning into a screen room or tent or fit panels to stop wind or sun. Some awnings such as the "foxwing"  run along the side and the back provide complete shade for the side and back. The amount of brands is mind boggling but brands like "tigerz"," roo systems", "foxwing", "arb", "polaris innovations" seem alright. Grab any 4wd or camping mag and have a look for other brands. Hope this helps. Smiley Mick

Mick has pretty well summed it up.

I have a foxwing. Here are a couple of pics

...

It is great in that it also covers the back and I can still lift the canopy back window under it.

Depends on what you want to spend and how often you use it.  Some good bargains on eBay and there are now cheap copies of the Foxwing http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FOXWING-BATWING-AWNING-LHS-MOUNTING-4X4-4WD-CAMPING-R...

Missed that area when I was down there a few years back.  I wanted to do the coast road and Coorong so went south of it.

That looks like a nice little camp spot Dave.

Jewel, our daughter and son in-law have an ARB side awning also and they are very happy with it.

Thanks every one, think I`m going to go with one ARB with a room attachment, then continue to use my 18 x 12 tarp over the majority,I just know with bad weather I can tie the tarp lower down to secure it.
