My wife just tells me they no longer sell Lamb Shanks in the pet food section of the supermarket. Bloody secret is out now. Who squealed? Now they cost heaps.

I went on a quest for lamb shanks here, in New Brunswick and came up dry. The local supermarkets are not true butcher shops, and the meat cutters who work there are given large cuts to process.

When I asked for shank, I was shown the upper part of the foreleg, minus the shin, sealed in the package that the store receives. I'm told that there is no market for shins at the retail level, and that the less than prime bits are ground for mince, at the processing facility. I'm sure that restaurants could source them in bulk, but not locally.

I did find one attached to an entire front leg, frozen and and imported from NZ, $30 Can. Smiley Smiley

A farmer just up the road raises sheep, but has no lamb on hand at this time. He did offer mutton, but I took a pass on that. Tongue

I may have a go with some lamb chops. It seems that I am operating under a disadvantage, being located on the wrong side of the planet and all. I reckon that might get me one pity vote to ward off the donuts.  Undecided

The farmer offered mutton ??

Jump at that offer Chris. Slow cooked mutton will have more flavour and is cheaper.

Its hard to find mutton nowadays.

Or you could jump the fence and use a couple of turkey drumsticks. Bit of gravy and you should be able to fool us  Cheesy Cheesy

You will need to come up with something else if you are after the pity vote  Grin Grin

Lamb shanks would be one of the most delicious things I have ever cooked/eaten... and assumed the entire world ate them (silly me)

When Chief owned a butcher shop many moons ago, lamb shanks were relegated to the dog food bin.
Then restaurants made them popular as a slow cooked gourmet meal.
Now he mutters under his breath when he sees how expensive they can be at certain times of the year.   Wink

Chris, somebody in Canada knows how to cook them....
http://www.canadianliving.com/food/braised_lamb_shanks.php

"These lamb shanks get their inspiration from a dish served by chef Danny Thibault at G? & Restaurant in Saint-G?on, Que. Like many chefs, he supports his local sheep farmers and creates delicious seasonal dishes in the process."

No photos though so check this out (have a napkin handy you WILL  Smiley)

After a quick trip down to Atherton for our weekly groceries, I was able to get some shanks, so I guess we are having lamb shanks for dinner tonight. Smiley
I have already got the heat beads on for Bonnie, so it is now time for me to have a beer. Smiley

My shanks are up, they went down very well even though we had visitors turn up just before I was ready to serve them up. They might have been able to smell them cooking. Smiley
