What a pack of scumbags. I'll never go there. I had an interesting experience on while camping on my own once. I was single at the time and the mates were busy so I went to a regular spot alone for the night. All was well, relaxing, around the fire with a beverage, listening to the cd player that was running off my generator, when all of a sudden the music stopped and the lights went out. Fearing someone was tampering with my geni, I followed the extension cord, pick handle in hand, down the track to where I'd put it behind a tree. Once there, wearing brown undies, I discovered I'd run out of fuel. All's well that ends well.

Its not burnt. Just really well done.

I never thought it would come to this but I take two camouflaged outdoor surveillance cameras on my camping trips these days and plant them in nearby trees.  And, boy, do I go to some remote, out of the way places where I am usually the only person for miles around, but it never ceases to amaze me how someone will always seem to drop in out of the blue —  just for a brew and a yarn.  Usually cattle men or vanners.

Up until about 18 months ago I never had to worry about my equipment - Gawd help anybody that tried to nick stuff with my dog around!  Since we lost her (age and illness) I have had quite a few rude awakenings - finding people at the front door who wouldn't normally make it past the letterbox without us knowing they were there etc.

With so many landlords and camping areas saying No to dogs these days we opted not to replace the old girl. Does make me nervous now regarding things going missing from camp while we are off exploring the area we are visiting.  Tis a sad sad world these days   Sad

That's the go.
You can get them for around $150 now. A good one like the LTL Acorn (just watch out for the knock offs)

I bought one for tracking Game but all I seem to get is these Jokers Grin Grin

In the Victorian Alpine National Park there are also significant risks to free campers from deer hunters who are permitted by DSE to hunt in certain areas of the park. There is a high percentage of these hunters who, rather than stalking deer on foot, choose to allow their 4WD to do the leg work. These activities generally occur at night on public roads and involve illegal spotlighting, drinking and indiscriminate shooting from motor vehicles into bushland, farmland, public recreational areas and along public roads.

If any COCIA member is planning a free camping trip within the Victorian Alpine National Park, it may be prudent to choose a camp site with high visibility from road. This may not necessarily protect you from being rudely awoken in the early hours of the morning by bright spotlights or loud gunfire, but it may at least ensure bullets aren’t flying in your direction, as could be the case if you are tucked up in a secluded or hidden camping spot in the bush.
If you witness illegal activities in the park, please report the matter to the local Police/ Crime Stoppers. Vehicle registration numbers are of particular interest to Police.

While I don't dis-agree that there are some that break the law & spotlight Deer in the Vic Alps.
What youvé written sounds like it has come direct from an Extreme Green's central Melbourne, office dwelling.
Nothing short of scare mongering & slander.

I take offence to the way it is written because it labels hunters in general as a bunch of unruly red necks.
When in fact many of whom would be the first to report such behaviour before the Rotten Apple Sours the Barrel.

The "High percentage" bit is a bit hard to believe!

If the real truth were known, Most of the people chasing Deer in the Vic Alps are dedicated, licenced stalkers of high moral ground who have had to jump thru all manner of hoops just to get there in the first place. Often set deep in the remote regions of the Parks & never seen or heard.
They need to be, for one, that is how you find deer but also because the media (with the help of the Greens & others) has used precisely this type of slander to brainwash the masses as a means of furthering their agenda (& that of the UN)
Make no mistake, for a person in this country to be eligible for a firearms license, they have to have a squeaky clean back ground which is under constant scrutiny or they loose the lot, on the spot & no compensation for the cost of seized equipment whether guilty or not (& of course hefty Fines & penalties if convicted) this is the card the "Anti's" play all the time, False accusation alone is enough to cause considerable heart ache.

Regards, Mick.

G'day Mick,

For your information I'm not a Green and like yourself, I'm also a hunter, however I'm sorry report that in my experience as a resident and landholder in this area, there is are a large  number of deer hunters operating in Victorian Alps whose law breaking behaviour could only be described as pathological and without any concern to the risks their activities pose to other members of the public. However, the Police are aware of the problem and from what I gather they are determined to clean it up.

The point I was making in my earlier post is that free campers in the Victorian Alpine National Park need to be aware of the problem and exercise due care when choosing a campsite.
