I have just tried a clever & easy method to clean rusty items.
In this case, my Maryborough No. 10  camp oven + lid.

I bought some molasses from the local rural supplies.
I got 8 litres for $6.

I used 4 parts water to 1 part molasses.

I have read elsewhere to use 1 part molasses to 10 parts water.
I had been talking to a man at a local market who restores old jacks & he uses 4 parts water to 1 part molasses.
He told me its great for removing grease from the jacks.

(25-6-13)
I mixed the brew up & immersed the camp oven + lid in the solution.

Not long after there were bubbles coming to the top of the solution.
It had already started to work .

I have taken some pictures for all to  see the results of this process.

(29-6-13)
I removed the lid from the solution & washed all the solution from it.
After washing the lid & drying it off I used a wire brush on a drill to clean the remaining residue off.
Took about 10 minutes.

I have just oiled the lid & have yet to season it.

I have left the oven to soak in the solution for a few more days.

Just wondering if anyone on the forum has used this method before ??

How do I Remove Rust With Molasses & Water?

Read more: http://www.ehow.com/how_6974242_do-remove-rust-molasses-water_.html#ixzz2XHyxOCg...

Molasses and water is an environmentally friendly way to remove rust from iron and stainless steel. The mixture ferments creating acetic acid, which eats away at tough rust. It's also an inexpensive alternative. A jar of grocery store molasses will be enough to clean most garden tools. Save more on cleaning larger items such as machine and auto parts by buying molasses in bulk from a feed store.

Instructions

        1

Mix 10 parts of water with one part molasses in a container. Make enough mixture to completely cover the item from which you want to remove the rust.
        2

Place rusted item(s) in container. Lightly cover the container to avoid evaporation.

Check items after a few days. Small, lightly rusted items take only a couple of days to come clean. Large, heavily rusted items will take up to three weeks.
4

Remove item(s) from the container, and clean with hot water and a wire brush.
5

Completely dry the item(s), and coat with oil or paint to stop rust from resurfacing.

Tips & Warnings

The Molasses mixture can be used more than once. Dispose of the mixture in your garden or compost.

Well done mate.  That lid came up a treat.

Have never done this before myself but I know Saltbush Bill does.

I have just removed the camp oven from the molasses & water solution to check on it.
I gave it a wash & a bit of a scrub with a washing up brush to get some of the residue off it.

As you can see by the pictures it came up looking great.

I am going to immerse it for another few days to get the real stubborn stuff off.

It always surprises me just how well most old rusty ovens come up after cleaning. A quick season now and its ready for many many years of use.

I am extremely happy with the results.

Once it gets seasoned I will get cooking.
I am keen to cook some corn silverside in it after reading other posts about it on this forum.
Especially the method in the first post here >>  http://www.aussiecampovenforum.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1213513547/0
Looks extremely tasty.

I also now have another cleaning project.

My mate has a 40 year old wok that is rusted all over.
His Dad got it with the first BBQ to have an external burner installed on it.

I will immerse that in some molasses & water solution.

Pictures will follow in another post.

That came up great mate. I just took an oven out of molasses today and gave it its first seasoning. It also came up great. I put a couple more in the molasses bath this afternoon. Smiley

I seasoned the camp oven at lunch time yesterday (Sunday).
I placed in it the barbeque for just over an hour.
Temperature reached slightly over 500 degrees F.
I used heavy fencing wire to lift the lid on the oven.
(An idea I saw on this forum).  Smiley
