Hey Aussie cousins, what is your opinion on the Metters gem pans? Not too one eyed, OK? Grin

Size, shapes and quality etc.

I like them and use them
Cast iron of course..
You can get them in a cast alloy.
I was given mine - don't know what they are worth.

I use mine to make the ginger gems with a twist.
Also make mini quiches.
Will try to find a link within the forum.

Nice art Aart and tasty looking too!

The Metters is the only one I have come upon over this side so I jumped on it.
It will be my first piece of Aussie cast iron.
I have a couple of hemisphere type gem , butter ball, aebleskiver pans.
I much prefer savouries so that is what I mainly use mine for.
Most of them are 2" diameter or a bit more; I like to put as much in them as I can.
It is a false hope because , as with jaffles, more in means more mess Grin

It will be interesting to see what size this one is.

The price doesn't vary much, about $18 at a swap meet, $25 or more at an Antique Shop. Metters and Simpson are common with a lot of un-named ones around.

I've made Jam Drops using packet cake mix with a teaspoon of jam in the middle, easy for afternoon tea, keeps the bride happy.

I use both branded and unbranded gem irons. My favourites are some very old and heavy unbranded irons which an old lady kindly gave me thirty odd years ago. They apparently belonged to her grandmother and have a beautiful smooth casting on the inside of the cups and a fantastic non stick patina, presumably from the tens of thousands of gem cakes they have cooked in their time (they are not featured in the photos, for security reasons I don't take them camping and reserve them for home use only).
Aluminum gem irons are also excellent, particularly if weight is a consideration with the camping kit

The Metters arrived late last week and is waiting in the soup.
I haven't ventured out over the weekend as the weather is piddling down. A good excuse to tuck up warm, read a good book and waste away a weekend.
More to come when its processed and seasoned.
