Hi all,
I have been issued with a hand me down oven from the in laws,
I am at wits end as to knowing what It is. Maybe someone out there maybe able to shed some light on it for me.... Undecided

I've seen that style cast iron pot, usually lidless, on ebay quite regularly.

I suspect it was used for a family stew over the fireplace, or when stoves came in, you had sections of the stove lid that you you lift off and set your cast iron cook utensil over the heat.

I use the word utensil quite deliberately. Such utensils moulded for the stove included frying pans with what was called a heat ring. The frying pan sat down where the stove lid was removed and the heat ring helped to hold the heat around the frying pan.

I have a couple of those books by Smith and Wasson. Likely, I picked up these tidbits from them.

This is called a Franklin bean pot. It is styled to appear Early American, but were widely marketed by Sears Roebuck and others in the 60's to present day, for use with Franklin stoves.

The Franklin Stove was named after Ben Franklin, who invented it. It has doors on the front that can be opened to simulate a fireplace hearth.

This particular one looks like those made in Birmingham Alabama by Birmingham Stove and Range. Sometimes the lid is dimpled, to give a hammered appearance. This company is no longer in business.

Hi KL,

I did a few searches and it appears this item can still be bought from the U.K. see below:

So the conclusion is, that you may have English or American in-laws. That information would assist in this search.

We just need to determine if your Bean Pot is an old original or a recent reproduction.

Thanks guys ,from what I have found out so far from them is that they received it when they bought a heater around 30years ago and it does have a dimpled lid.
