Furphy single jaffle iron just sold on eBay for $215.50. I thought I had it but I wasn't even close. Feeling pretty wealthy about now are you Chally Wink

LOL!!! One of ours has been carted bush for around 20 years now and hopefully it will be for another 20 or more. Smiley As they say 'made to be used'.  Wink

The second one (which we have only had for a couple of years) has just sat around home unused as a spare. Smiley

I think it would have been made by Billmans.

Jeff, are yours square or round????

Was not aware that Billmans made them for Furphy.

Both of ours are double square ones Derek. Astro has a Furphy catalogue from the time when Billmans were making the Furphy products and the round jaffle irons the same as the eBay one are in it. The square ones were not. Billmans made all Furphy's cast iron products in the late 1990's I believe.

Here are three photos.

First one is the current one on eBay.   Second an old photo of what I have always thought as being an original Furphy.  Third is my Chinese one.

Interesting.

Interesting Derek. Putting aside your China made one; the other two are obviously made from different moulds. The kangaroo and koala emblems being on different halves of the irons is the most obvious thing but there are other difference in the castings as well.

Photos 1 and 3 are the same as the Furphy Jaffle iron I have here. About 6 years ago I was buying these Irons direct from the Furphy Factory. At that time if you bought 6 or more they were selling them for $26-28 a piece. From memory I sold 5 on Ebay and kept one for my self.
It was a fairly profitable phone call to find out if the factory was indeed selling them direct to the public at that time.

If you look at number 3 it has threaded handles.  I have two of these and both the same.  Number 1, the one on eBay does not appear to have threaded handles.

That is a lot of money for a jaffle iron. I still don't think it was even made by Furphy.

Our double jaffle irons have threaded handles also.

I think it may be going to set a record.  Currently $406.02 and over a day to go.

Must be a couple of people desperate to get this one.

Getting back to the original question Derek. As far as I am aware the earliest and most collectible Furphy Jaffle Irons , do have wire spring type handles like those on the one on Ebay at the moment.
As for if those handles are the right ones for that particular Iron, or who made it, or when, I have no idea.  Undecided

As I've always said Furphy are very overrated but I can't complain, I've done well out of the ones I've on sold. No, I didn't sell that jaffle iron.

And I thought I paid too much to Peter at Dorrigo Antiques for my $25 Vintage Toastie Toaster Jaffle Iron.  I offered him $20 and he told me to put it back on the shelf.  He has never been one to enter into a bargain.  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Every person with a Furphy product, be it Chinese or Aussie is trying to get some ridiculous money for it. Here is a Chinese Furphy 10 starting at 350 dollars.

I don't understand this one.  The bidding was up to $355.00 with three bids and he withdrew the ad and put it up as a buy now at $370 and it is still sitting there

He must have got a few made up. Like the ovens we will probably see them for sale on eBay for a long time to come.

The old ones were made in Australia.  Furphy then had them made in China from about 2000 until two years ago.

No longer in production.

I have two of those. Paid $38 for them in around 2007.

Ahhhh, they still had some left.  Very good.  Bit better than the eBay prices that I have seen as much as $470 each.

You would think people would do their homework before parting with that much coin on a jaffle iron.

This bloke is keen.  He has been running this ad on Gumtree since March this year.  Wants $300 and he has been also on eBay selling the same, or at least trying.

Looking in the previous sold listings he already sold 2 in August both for $270 each,... you can bet your bottom dollar there will be at least 6 more to come.

So when do these Jaffle irons become legitimate collectables? Next week?...when there are no new ones left in shops?....next year?.....when one appears in a antiques guide book?.....or in 20 years time. Im interested to know when it would be ok to pay more for one than its original purchase price?

I think it is all about supply and demand really.  If people really, really want one then they will pay the dollars for one.

I must say though that in my opinion $270 for one that was $38 last week is a bit too much to pay.

An item becomes a collectable the moment it is made.

A person will only pay for an item what they think that item is worth, weather it be $35 for a Chinese made Iron or 1k for a Chinese made iron, it's completely up to them.

Do you think it's OK that they listed the item as "Antique" ?

Been actually looking at this since I posted above.

It seems that the "accepted" definition most likely is:

Vintage = Older than 40 years (Apart from wines which are a different definition)
Antique = Older than 100 years

So that must make A "Genuine" Antique 150+ years old ?

Considering it was most likely made less than ten years ago in China I would most likely say "NO"   Cheesy

Be interesting to see how long it or another one comes back on the market.
