Just thought I would share this as a matter of interest.

Have been loading up the motorhome and it is freezing cold tonight.  Had the diesel heater going as well as several lights for around five hours.

Although I am connected to power I rarely need to use the 40 amp charger.

As you can see in the first photo the state of charge was down to 94%, volts are at 12.5 and everything that is turned on is currently drawing 5.02 amps.

That is all about normal had we of been free camping.

Just out of curiosity I decided to flick the mains 40 amp charger on. I have it set up on a wireless remote switch.

Now check out the second photo.

The volts have shot up to 13.26 and the charge going in is 37.57 amps.

I expect by now, the batteries will be at 100% state of charge as I did this a while ago.

Had I of not turned the 240 volt charger on by about 8.30 tomorrow morning the solar would have kicked in and also have brought them back to full state of charge.

I love the accuracy of these things as at anytime I can see exactly what is happening to my batteries.

I went from the 40amp charger down to a 25amp charger. With the 40amp charger I found that it only put high charge in for a very short time before dropping below 20 amps.
With the Victron app on the phone I can now see exactly what is happening during the charging of the batteries.
I hope to have the new solar regulator by early next week.

The new Victron Smart Solar controller has arrived and I have started to fit it in.

The controller it self was a easy swap, But I now need to rethink the solar panels themselves.

I ran the panels in a parallel configuration on the old controller, but I need to change to a series system now. The Victron controller needs a minimum of 5v above battery float to start the charging.

To achieve this, I need the panels to be in series so the voltage should de around 36v.
I have had to remove all the panels and also move one into a new position on the roof of the camper, so the panels can now be wired in series.

They make a nice bit of gear, Victron.

I have sometimes wondered whether I should switch from parallel to series with my panels.  I currently have 420 watts of panels and they seem to work very well with the Enerdrive MPPT.

I did not plan to change the solar system itself, but testing with the cloudy weather we have had since I started fitting the Victron controller, made me do it.  The voltage was dropping too low to start the charger with my small test panels of only 80w.
I did not know of this with the Victron unit then. I had looked at reviews, but this was not ever explained why they used 36v or higher.
Victron themselves though explain why, once I started to look into using a series system.

I first came across it when someone posted on a forum where they had just installed a new system and it wouldn’t work.

It is amazing what we learn from others.

The panels are back on the camper, now if I get a bit of sun, I might be able to test them.
I have been running my small fridge for a few days to bring the batteries down a bit so I can then get a better idea how the system works recharging the batteries.
I have a folding 80w solar panel that I have now converted to be in series which is set up outside he shed. But it is to early and also overcast and raining today, so I am getting no power from it at all, at this stage.

HI John
Those solar panel are looking good. I have the same amount of panels on my caravan. Plenty of power to be made.
Good luck with you ventures .
