A few days ago there was some discussion on one of the Facebook pages regarding a Furphy Jaffle Iron.

Unlike the Chinese ones I have seen this one had the old type wire handles yet they were not like the handles on the genuine old Furphys I had ever seen.

It got a bit narky and the post was taken down.

Anyway it has  appeared on eBay with a starting price of $150.  No bids as I post.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Jaffle-iron-Furphy-/172396472856

To me it kinda looks like a Chinese one that someone has replaced the handles on.

Thoughts???????

Would they normally be painted like that? I just cant think why they (Furphy) would paint the actual cast plates when it would just peel off in the fire and potentially contaminate your food?...I can understand the handles being painted but not the plates,....it just seems a bit odd to me. Huh

Was wondering if anyone else would pick up on the black paint. Smiley

I think those handles are from a camp oven lid lifter that has had the ends cut off and a thread put on and screwed into the cast iron.

The ones that I bought from furphy were the same bare cast iron inside and out, No paint to be seen.
But then mine had wooden handles too.

Interesting the lengths people will go to. I wonder is it against the law or just a crappy act. I would think it would have to be against the law somehow. Forgery, or conman type crimes. Not exactly on the scale of selling a forged Rembrandt or something but stealing is stealing.
I think you have picked the handles Derek. Great bit of detective work that Sherlock  Grin Smiley

I think a lot of people are just guessing at what irons Furphy actually made ........Ive seen quite a few different varieties, some double , some single, some with spring type handles, some with wooden handles.
The type of handle used on this jaffle iron isn't  uncommon as shown by Derek lid lifter.
The same handles were also used on welders hammers for chipping slag of of welds.
Some of the double furphy jaffle irons  also had the same spring type handles from memory.
I doubt that even the furphy factory could tell you what was what.

It was the usual post where he put the photos up and asked people what they thought of it. Attracted the usual comments then someone had a go at him over the Facebook Group being about camp ovens and not jaffle irons and then the post disappeared.

I see it had one bid on it.
