Here is the latest puzzle to be solved for our history section.
I bought this 12 inch oven earlier in the year at the Mudgeeraba Swap Meet for $70.
Ive seen about 6 of these ovens over the years so it is not a one off.
All of them bar one were in QLD. The other was for sale some years ago in Northern NSW.
Whoever made these ovens didn't spare the cast iron, they will put a 12 inch Furphy or a Carmichael oven to shame in the weight department.
They really are a heavy oven.
...
The lids of these ovens have a shallow gutter to hold the coals on, much smaller than most Australian made ovens.
...
...
Who ever made these ovens took the easy way out and cast tab style ears and lid handle. Then drilled holes in them.
...
...
Inside of lid complete with asking price.
...
Close up of tab style ear.
...
...
Legs are a good size at 2 1/2 inches Smiley
...
Two sprue or gate marks on the bottom of the oven..one looks like it was snapped off.
...
A photo next the a normal camp oven to try and give some perspective of how heavily these ovens are built.
...
Have any other forum members seen these ovens around, or do any of you own one. I have been told by one old antique dealer from QLD that they were cast up as a "Job on the side" in one of the Maryborough railway workshops.
This is probably completely wrong but is all I have to go on at this stage.
Hopefully we can find out more about these ovens and who made them.

Interesting comment because the old railway/main roads camp ovens have the same handle on the lid where it is a tab and drilled out.

True Derek and not something I had considered until you bought it up.

We are going to have to cook out of it one day Rory, just for the hell of it. Luckily you stocked up on beads at the Masters closing sale cause it is probably going to take a few to heat it up  Grin

Thanks for that information Brett, it beginning to sound like there may be more to the Railway story than I first thought. Keep your ear to the ground and see what else you can find out.
Do you have a set of scales you could weigh yours with, Id be interested to know what they do weigh.

I dont have any scales to weigh mine , You wouldnt want to have to carry a couple of them very far.
