With all the rain we have been having and the fresh water working its way down the rivers the Ludrick are schooling around the break walls and river mouths.
While these fish normally eat weed, at times like this they go crazy for salt water yabbies.
My son and I went fishing a few days ago and caught our bag limit of ten each in about 2 hours.
Theres nothing like a feed of fresh crumbed fish with a few fillets left over to be Cryovaced and frozen.

That pic had me salivating more than somewhat Rory.
Great fishing there. Cool
Are you still allowed to call them n....rs? Is what they were when I first caught them at Lakes Entrance in Vic. Embarrassed

Funny thing is, the folk who might now take exception to that identification would come into the pub to announce the n.....s are on  Grin

Actually it took longer to aquire the taste for them than actual catching, as you say at certain times a single shrimp is deadly. They didn't just barely suck the float down as on weed, it was hammered. Shocked
Sure do miss salt water fishing, rock, beach or estuary Cry

As long as they are bled and filleted quickly they are ok , Ive never had a problem with the weird taste that some say they have.

I remember the old fishers used to always keep then in a keeper net then killed filleted and the black stomach lining removed straightaway.

I love them for eating.

As a kid, I spent many hours fishing for them in Swansea channel, Lake Macquarie. Still got my old split cane luderick rod and reel in the shed somewhere - hasn't been used for years.

I don't mind them, along with pigs (black drummer) even though I am rather spoilt with the variety of good table fish here in the tropics.

If you fillet them carefully you don't get any of that black lining.

I like catching Black fish, but I find them oily.
Jeff, When the fish are on in the Swansea channel it is standing room only.

Every time we go to Yamba when the blackfish and mullet are running the fish shop attached to the Fishermans Co-Op has a special on for local fish and chips at $5 and you get to choose between mullet and blackfish.

I can live on both of them but generally get the blackfish as they give you two pieces. I find them deep fried in the batter to be fantastic.

I haven't actually caught one for years. The last time was at Iluka and caught one that was about 6 inches long. Grin

A bit like tailor fishermen on Fraser Island I expect.  Must admit though I wouldn't mind another trip up there around September when the tailor are running.

Fresh caught and smoked tailor are extremely nice eating.

We had a COG up there in August 2009 so yep, it is certainly worth looking at.  Any other interest from people.  Mind you I am getting a bit beyond camping on the ground so maybe have to rent a big house up there depending on numbers.
