Hi Damo

I learnt to camp oven cook in a Bedourie camp oven.  In fact it was my first and only one for many years.

I think I just about cooked everything you could imagine in it over time.

It never got seasoned (by the way I still have and use it) because we really didn’t know about seasoning in those days.  I just cooked in it and over time it got blacker and blacker.

These days Southern Metal Spinners include tips for seasoning them.

Prior to all the work I did with Heat Beads when cooking in it I used to dig a hole just bigger than it and about half it’s depth.  Throw in a shovel of coals, put the Bedourie in and build some up around the sides and a shovel on top.

As simple as that sounds it worked.

These days it is Heat Beads and they make it so much easier.  Certainly you need to watch them if there is a breeze as it will easily take away your heat.

My advice is to just use it and have a play.  I primarily use mine these days for cooking pastries and it still works well.

Here is a little video

Damo,
This is my oven. Just wash and dry over heat and spray with oil, heat till it smokes, or just cook some pork chops in it.  I use the lid as a fry pan.

What would a new Bedourie cost.
I see a 4wheel drive centre is selling a 12" one for $38.

regards Kev

I agree with shackles , you wont learn much standing around, you learn by getting in there and burning stuff. Grin

Must get a Bedourie, just for the weight.
I have a Simpson, but it is well beyond restoration.

Weight certainly can sneak up on you if you don’t watch it.

I carried back near 35 kilos of cast iron from the last COG at Towitta.
