Maggie and I have been missing catching up with people due to no COG’s.

The weather has been atrocious around here and I think the whole country has been chaotic as far as drought, severe heat and now floods.

Really looking forward to Alstonville in July.

Who is coming??????

Crikey, that's further away than I thought. Had a sudden desire to drive over to a COG but I might have to wait 12 months to put some cash away

From mid March onwards will suit us.  However need to set a date soon as we are planning a busy year.

Anyone giving some thought to what you might cook????

Jilli (Topknot) has convinced me to try a French Cassoulet. Never cooked it before so could be interesting.

Will bring the 16” camp oven for it

I am very keen to do a Paella.
Will do the Pork dish that I have not yet posted for this months challenge. Has been cooked and photos taken.
Also a variety of dampers.
Might do a Sate Chicken again.

I'm not showing my hand at this early stage, still experimenting on a couple of recipes.

I just found a recipe called “Mutton & Maggot Soup”.  I might try it out on y’all at the COG.

Might not be able to get mutton so will most likely use some old lamb neck chops.  Shocked

Shouldn't be to hard to find the maggots. Grin
You could always substitute the mutton neck chops for Lamb Shanks.

I remember doing a recipe I called "Road kill 'roo"  at an early COG and many of the women wouldn't touch it, mutton and maggots sounds good though.

There is always that big undercover carport up the top if the weather comes in bad.
I will not be there this year but Grasshopper (Rolly) has promised me he will cook a little something sweet for you all.
Have a great time everyone.

In the past we have had drought, rain, heavy rain, heavier rain, flooding rain, storms, hail and the list goes on.

Have enjoyed every one of them.  Grin Grin Grin Grin

The one at Rocky it rained so much the Bruce Highway was flooding behind me as I drove home.

Aart will remember it as he nearly lost his footwear in the mud.  Did I say mud  Shocked Shocked Shocked

Every one knows that a large number of camp ovens attracts heavy rain, hail and thunder storms........Thora, Broke and Alstonville, bring your gumboots.

It's true. I stepped out of Mike's truck straight into 8 inch deep mud. Pulled my feet up and out of the footwear. Left them there till I went to go home 3 days later.

It's true. I stepped out of Mike's truck straight into 8 inch deep mud. Pulled my feet up and out of the footwear. Left them there till I went to go home 3 days later.

Every one knows that a large number of camp ovens attracts heavy rain, hail and thunder storms........Thora, Broke and Alstonville, bring your gumboots.

We should have a COG in western NSW, we would likely break the drought.

Countdown is on.  Less than three weeks to go.

Just spoke to Narelle at the Showgrounds and all is good for us in the same area as last year.

Looking forward to it.

While at Alstonville we must all sit around the campfire and organise another one at Alstonville for around this time next year as well as another one in between. Smiley

I wouldn’t mind another trip out west.  Silverton is a great place but there are others as well.

Is Coles the only super market in Alstonville? Is there a good butcher and are they recommended or do most just bring everything they are going to cook. Cheers

Yes Coles is the only supermarket in Alstonville, there is two butchers and both are pretty good and two bakers. Lismore and Ballina are both 15 minutes away with large IGA's and Woolworths and stuff.

Maggie and I either arrived early or stayed late with a COG once and had dinner at a nice little Indian Restaurant in the Alstonville shopping centre.

I think it was a BYO.

Between Alstonville, Lismore and Ballina we are pretty well catered for with just about everything.

Thanks all left at 9:30am this morning and currently at Moulamein, NSW in the local van park. $15 per person with power, water and ablution block. Old park but clean and the night is cold so electric heater and blanket on. They also give 10%discount with a seniors card.

Will decide tomorrows route once we have fuelled up at Hay.cheers Bear

Possibility Maggie and I won’t make it.

The flu has really taken over with me in the last 24 hours and I think it would be foolish to attempt the trip.

We will see how we go day by day and may just get there for a shorter stay.

Both of us are very disappointed but will see how we go.

Here are some photos from the COG.

First dish as an entree was Robs chicken noodle soup.

This was followed by Kevs chilli con carne, Johns curry and rice,  Judy’s cauliflower gratin and Jeannie’s stew

After the main meal, all of which were delicious we sat around the campfire while Aart’s not one but two camp ovens of apple crumble were cooked for dessert.

More tomorrow.

I haven’t done any cooking this trip and won’t be tonight either.

The flu caught up with me and I have spent just about all day in bed.

Maggie and I will be heading home in the morning.

Managed to get up for a short while at lunch and grab a few photos.

First is one of Aart’s savoury damper scrolls.  He did two camp ovens full.

Second one is what was left of Rory’s chilli mussels. I got there a bit late for that one.

Will try and get some of tonight’s dinner.

Can someone please take a group photo before anyone leaves tomorrow.
What about a roll call so we all know who is at Alstonville?

As best as I can remember from last night

Started off with a Pete’s chicken and corn soup then a platter of riblets and salami (cannot remember who did that)

Mains were Roberts chorizo and vegetable stew, Muzz’s roast pork, Judy’s potato bake, Jeannies roast vegetables (sorry no pick), Rob’s corned beef, Rory’s smoked ribs, Brian’s Turkish pide, Aart’s chicken kilpatrick.

Desert popped up with Judy’s pears in red wine and creamed rice and John’s peach and apricot cobbler.

Hope I got it all right

Finally back home after the COG, it was good. I think we all have learned and the menu has a lot more variety with soups, mains with vegetables and a choice of desserts.
Lots of terrific dishes, Rory's Chilli Mussels were memorable, can't remember all the food on offer, I know I went back for seconds on several and missed out on some others, all good.
Looking forward to our next COG which I hope will be much sooner than twelve months away.

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd

Same here Rob.
The NSW fire bans are a problem.
Shuts down a big chunk of the year.
Any ideas on Qld SE corner.
Toilets and showers for the ladies a must.

Brian & Robert

I think you guys have more chance of getting a COG closer to you if you were to get together and pick a date and a location somewhere that suits you then see who can make it.

As you know we nearly all came to both Towitta and Silverton.

Maggie and I are planning on spending a big portion of next winter in the north so don’t count on us for a COG at this stage.

This year fire season finished 31st March in the Broken Hill area.
Next year could be different. They could extend it into April if it a bad year.

Yes shakles but the time off for the wife is the difference she is still a working girl.

But as Derek said maybe we can organise one closer if you have any suggestions as I still do not know what is around me.

Maybe able to involve some other people from another forum. They just need a love of camp cooking and the bush.

Cheers Bear
