So we've got plans to build a brick and tile outdoor cooking area. Figured if I started a blog, it might get me a little more proactive while building it. Haven't really got any plans set in stone, but currently I'm hoping to have a camp oven section, a gas barbecue and then some space at the end for a smoker.
Have taken a photo of what I'm starting with, not sure how to work that verandah post just yet, as my wife wants it along the fence where the garden is. Design phase hasn't started yet, but I'm open to ideas!

Get rid of the palms first and have a blank canvas. Same as I have to do when we move in to the new place so will be watching with interest. Good luck and happy planing cheers Robert

Yeah tomorrow morning I hope to get the plants out. Drawing up a bit of a design on the computer. I can chop it and change it as much as I like before building

That's Sketchup 2014 I think. I've used it for a couple of projects.

Exciting times ahead mate.

When I started on mine I had no idea other than the general layout as to how it would turn out.

Maggie originally wanted an old wood stove in ours but that didn’t eventuate.

It just kinda grew on me.

I am now contemplating trying and get a metal tray off the side of the deck to put the new Ozpig on.  Still not sure that is feasible.

That's the best thing about that program, being able to edit and play around before even laying the concrete pad. Gives me a chance to get that verandah post into a position where it won't be blocking anything. I've never laid a brick in my life so the building part could be interesting

So I've ripped out the palms, and started digging down a bit....and found a pipe. Not sure where it goes as I flew back up to work today so haven't had a chance to follow it. It runs just under the surface round the back of my shed into the chook yard. Hopefully it's a functioning water pipe so I can put a tap on the end of the BBQ, or even put in a sink

You might be able to extend the front facia of the veranda to the fence and put a post right on the fence line  that way the post will be completly out of the way

Only issue at the moment is funds. I was pondering leaving a gap behind the barbecue large enough to do that down the track, but then I wouldn't be able to dig in the footing. Another option is to make the area L shaped, along the fence, then cut inside the pole onto the verandah/alfresco area.
I want to lay the concrete pad next week, will I need blue metal in the mix or would brickies sand be ok? I haven't worked with cement in about 15 years and I've forgotten what I used to shovel into the mixer

First load of bricks picked up today. An old friend of mine has a bobcat and truck business so scored all these for free to save him landfill costs. Bit of work required cleaning them up, but can't complain about the price Smiley

Slight redesign to bring the BBQ into the verandah. Just need to get it approved by the wifey. Haven't laid any concrete yet. Have been a bit busier than expected these last few weeks.

So finished the basic design in a couple of different styles so Stacey could choose which one she preferred. Incorporated the dreaded post in there as well to see how it would look. She isn't keen on the L shape at all,  so looks like we're going straight down the fence. If all goes well the post will be in a perfect spot to lean on while cooking on the BBQ  Grin

If you wanted the BBQ wider could you cut the post off, put a flange on the bottom of it and bolt it to the top of the BBQ?

Post is no longer an issue. Just found this retic solenoid station about an inch under the dirt I was digging out to the left of the post. Back to the drawing board....

Yeah it's for my retic. It's got 4 solenoids in there. I have another spot I can put it which will just take up a bit of the lawn so I'll run that by the wife. There is a small garden I can move but it will make it too tight to fit a gas BBQ and a camp oven section. And the whole purpose was to get my camp ovens up off the ground onto something permanent

Back into it. Clearing a different garden bed. Hoping to get a pad laid down over the next month, then start laying bricks during a 5 week break from work I've got coming up in January

Laid my first ever brick yesterday. Wasn't as easy as the YouTube videos made it look, but I got better as the afternoon wore on. Initially bought 5 bags of mortar, this photo was taken about halfway through my third bag. Will have to go and get more today

I keep stressing about how messy I've been with my bricks, but I'll be rendering it down the track, so my messiness doesn't matter. I just won't be building a brick house anytime soon  Grin

I have never enjoyed DIY bricking myself.  When I have done it in the past that first course of bricks is always the hardest.

So I've taken a bit of a break from this project for a few months as we had bills to catch up on and I was getting cranky, so wasn't doing the best job I could. Though noticed my progress pictures are well behind the eight ball, thought I'd better post where I'm at.
I've test fitted my BBQ to make sure it fits, and have started laying a bit of concrete under where I plan to start building the "airflow" section of the camp oven area. Now I've slowed down and had time to look at what I plan to do, hopefully finishing the brickwork won't take too long. Off to bunnings today or tomorrow to get the BBQ grates I'll be placing on the camp oven side and give me a measurement to work off

Under the BBQ, I placed a piece of aluminium sheet I had lying around and then did a layer of bricks on top of that. Seems to have formed up nice and solid, I was worried it would flex and crack all the mortar, but so far so good

Finished bricking up the camp oven side today. Next weekend I'll finish bricking around the BBQ. Then it's just a matter of filling space till I can brick or concrete the top ready for the next stage

Jeepers, no progress photos for a while. Haven't really been getting much done lately. I have one more nightshift tomorrow (tonight), before flying home Thursday to 5 weeks off work. Goal is to get this thing finished or as close to as possible ready for the summer BBQ season

So I've managed to get the BBQ finished structurally. Next will be a layer of render to tidy and level everything out, before tiling the top and maybe a second coat of render on the sides if it needs it. Don't know much about either task so relying on YouTube a bit now

Looking good tadpole.
Render is easy if you have the right tools.

First bit of rendering is done. Need to get a couple more bags to finish off. Was a bit nervous before starting but turns out it is pretty easy once you get the right mix happening. Off to the shop now to get more render, hoping to get this part finished by tomorrow but we have a bit of rain forecast so not sure I will. Tiling over the top so didn't worry about colouring that part

Was a bit heavy handed with the colour, came out a bit yellow. My wife is happy with it though Smiley

Tiling done and grouted. Think I may put it to use soon. Want to tidy up the corners between the render and the tiles down the track as I'm not happy with that. Probably just run a bit of render up to the edges I guess

Shouldn't be long. Want to polish up my barbecue a bit before installing it then maybe give my ovens a season to dress them up for photos Grin

Looking good but why the different coloured tiles?

I just used tiles I had in the shed. Didn't have enough of one to cover the entire top. So we decided to put the white gloss ones at the food prep area for easy cleanup. The large tile on the back right is for my heat bead starter. Not sure how it'll hold up with that kind of heat, but I'll just replace it down the track if i have to. And the grey tiles behind the BBQ  will hopefully have a little herb garden on them soon

All good I wondered if that was the case. Not sure how the tile will handle that sort of heat; wait and see I guess.

The BBQ in action. Unfortunately my heat bead starter floor tile cracked on first use doing the eggplant the other day so will explore other ideas. Open to any suggestions

Looks great Dave.
My suggestion is use an all clay type tile..
No ceramic top.
No doubt that would give you an uneven surface with the surrounding tiles.

Looks great mate. Another suggestion is perhaps just tile it again normally and place one of those whitish fire bricks or similar, that they line combustion stoves with, on top of them and you then place the heat bead chimney on that.

I've seen those bricks at bunnings, I'll go and check them out when I'm in there next and have a look at their alternate tile options as well. I'm happy to leave the current tile in for now as the crack isn't too obvious and I'll just light the starter on the grill for now. But I'll need that spot for my third oven when I get that down the track

Looks good, Bonnie and I are thinking of redoing our front verandah, so I hope Bonnie does not have a look at your setup. Smiley
