Setting myself up for failure here. Decided to run a bit of a "blog" on my trials and tribulations during the current marron season. Won't be heading out for my first trip till next week. Have seen some good catches coming already from further south so my hopes are high

Been watching some of Graham's solo work on YouTube. Find it much more enjoyable than his 4wdaction stuff. It's called Ausolo on his Ecomuse Images channel

Just got back from the first trip of the season. Plenty of marron about but they seemed a bit skittish so tended to outsmart me a bit. 2 adults and 3 kids walking along the bank with headlights might've been a bit of overkill with the artificial light. Going to attempt a more stealthy approach on my next go. All up we got 6 on the first night and only 1 on the second night. Plus one redfin and 2 long necked tortoises

The marron look delish  Smiley Smiley Smiley

I’m guessing they have the same taste/texture of s yabbie?

Reddie looks a good eating size.

What was your tortoise/turtle soup like? Cheesy

I like the marron more than yabbies. Similar texture to a crayfish, taste closer to a yabby, but with a hint of cray maybe. Made really good sandwiches with a bit of salt and pepper! Got a couple of good fillets off the redfin which I still have sitting in the car fridge, will have them tomorrow for brekky or lunch.

My mum sent me that yesterday. It was on the The West Australian Facebook page as well. Hopefully it means every man and his dog will be heading to Busselton this weekend. I've got a trip planned to the Murray River again but a bit further down than where I went last week trying to avoid the Aussie Day crowds

Got back yesterday. Didn't really try very hard with the marroning, so didn't catch anything. Was a nice little spot about an hour and a half from home.

Went on a bit of a scouting mission very close to home last night. And found quite a few marron. All of a 5.6km drive from home. With only 4 days left of the season, I hope to do a good session down here over the weekend. I caught 3 all up in 2 hours, all were just a little undersize so didn't keep any, but it's a good sign for when I don't feel like driving an hour or 2 onto the SW forests, as I did see bigger specimens hovering back off the baits, just out of reach of my scoop. I also saw heaps of freshwater cobbler, so will get some worms and have a go at a few of those guys

Went back to my local waterhole last night, used drop nets this time with great success. Got my PB marron with a 95mm carapace. Thinking of trying to mount him in my shed if I can find a good ant nest to clean him out for me. Also picked up a couple cobbler. Wasn't sure how to clean them properly so filleted one and massacred it, so cooked the other whole minus the head. Was very tasty for breakfast.

I usually drive a nail through the head onto a post.

Make a cut just through the skin right the way around just below the gills.

Then using a pair of pliers grab the skin and simply pull it off.

Then you can fillet as a normal fish or cook whole without the skin on.

Very nice looking marron as well.

Interesting read Tad. Not sure exactly where u are but looks like great murray cod fishing areas. Korinne and I have spent a weekend yabbie fishing using baited traps and string lines, and we ended up with around 30 yabbies which we took home and boiled up. Haven't bothered since, after peeling them and only having enough meat for a couple of sandwiches.  They were tasty though.

Its not burnt. Just really well done.

I'm in SW WA so no murray cod over here. I actually had a laugh today while making a marron sandwich at lunch, thinking back to when I lived in Leinster and the amount of effort I had to go to to get a yabby sandwich. I used one marron tail to make a sandwich and it was loaded on pretty heavy.
Just got home from my last marroning session this year. Season closes tomorrow at lunchtime and unfortunately I got bugger all tonight

Read somewhere that Murray Cod where relaced into a water way down Albany way back in the late 1800's.

I have heard of them trying to get cod over here but I don't think I've heard of any being caught. There was apparently one massive one caught in a lake in the city somewhere a couple of years ago. Not sure how much truth is in that rumour
