Hi Every one you may not not be interested in this info.
I just found out that next week from the 21/10/2019
to the 27/10/2019 in National Bird Week.
On the internet they are encouraging people to get involved
in the Aussie Backyard bird count.
As we live in a life style village we do not have  a lot of birds but we do have a lot of Blue wrens around our villas We also some wetland area down beyond our caravan storage area so hopefully I will get down there during the week and attempt to get some numbers.
regards Kevvie (Kev)

We've had a Storm Bird (Koel) move into our yard.
You know I love birds, but he hasn't shut up for the last 3 days.
Will try and get a photo.

No Koels here yet for the season.  My neighbour a few doors down has a Moreton Bay Fig Tree and one usually sits in it and screams for hours.

Have notice some Dollar birds that have migrated down and we are also seeing a larger number of Channel Billed Cuckoos this season than previous years.

Ahhh little beauties.  Still one of my favourite birds.

I put a parrot sized nesting box up on my shed a little while ago to try and attract the pale headed rosellas that we have around here.

I think I was a little late in the season though and it hasn’t attracted anything as yet.

I built a couple boxes three years ago hoping to attract some pale headed rosella. No results the first year, a swarm of bees took up residence for a while second year and after they decided it wasn't good enough & swarmed again I cleaned the wax out of the box, repainted it & a pair of rainbow lorikeets have moved in. I think they have hatched chicks buy the butcher birds have been annoying them & I think have managed to lay an egg in the box as I,m sure I saw a lorikeet feeding one from outside the box last week. I seem to spend a lot gazing at the nest & one bird sits at the entrance a lot & there is a lot of coming & going.

I have gone off to find myself. If I get back before I return, keep me here.

Nice photo Keith.

I can remove the top on my box to check in if necessary.  I would be happy to see a lorikeet in mine.

This area is alive with Indian Mynahs so keeping a good lookout for them to make sure they don’t take up residence.

Hi Derek
I didnot do the count as a lot of people in the village did so.
For me I went down to the Caravan storage which backs onto the wetland. This area as been eyemarked for the
Coomera connection road
Anyway I did see a lot of finches including Double bars, Red Brow fire tails and Chestnut breasted Mannikin. Was great to see them. I had all these finches   when I was a member of the Qld. Finch Society

Woke this morning to the sound of an Eastern Koel.  First time this year.

We have a couple of Moreton Bay Figs a couple of hundred metres away from the house and he seems to mark an area around then as territory.

If you are looking for a gift for Christmas for someone or even yourself checkout the Birdlife Australia Website.

I have ordered their calendar for myself.  I don’t use a calendar as such other than The electronic one on my iPad but the bird photos on this one are superb.

Final result of the bird count.

There is an understanding that we have 828 different birds in Australia so this count over a week that found 628 birds has to be pretty good I think.

Disappointing to see the both the feral Indian or Common Minor and the House Sparrow in the top 10 though.

It should be like the old days when we were kids we use go around with our air rifles and shoot the Indian Miner birds and Sparrows, cut their heads off and take them up to the local council office and collect the bounty on them. We made good pocket money that way.  Smiley How the times have changed.  Roll Eyes

Took this photo a couple of years ago of some double barred finches at my bird feeding station.

I am now watching two of them building a nest in a grevillea about 10 metres from our back patio.

Keeping my distance until they are well settled and finished.  Will take some photos then.

I am stoked.

Hi Derek
What a great photograph. the double bar are a great little finch along with the red brow finch. You are very lucky people.
years along I would collect the long pieces of couch grass and other grass the wind would blow along the road
then seat back and watch the finches fly around the aviary
picking up the grass and making their nests.
Looking forward to seeing any photos in the future
regards Kev.

Kev, I have seen the odd plum haded finch up along my back fence however they do not seem to want to come into the yard.

As the trees get bigger and more established that may change though.

Yet to see a red browned finch here at home.

We have too many Noisy Miners in the yard.
They scare off the smaller Finch sized birds.
They even attack the Bush Turkey.

I do have noisy minors but few and far between.  For a native bird they can be quite gregarious.

We don't have many trees in the village but a lot of  blue male and plain fairy wren which jump in and out of the hedges we do have.
I also see the starling have increased in number in the past few months.   Kev.

We are up at Atherton visiting family and they live on five acres with established trees. I often see Double Bars and Redbrows in their front yard. The Double Bars are nesting in one of the fruit trees.

We are having a great time up here Kev. We will head back south when the granddaughters go back to school. There is a lot of bird life here which is great to see and entertaining at times. A couple of Bush Curlews nested here, Willy Wagtails just fledged a young one but there should have been two but a Kookaburra got the other one the day it fledged. Some White Cockatoos came in and were demolishing the cones on the Norfolk Pines. Lots of other smaller bids around also. Lastly there is a flock, if that is the correct word, of a dozen Guinea Foul that roam the neighbourhood.

Don’t ask me how or why but a group of guinea fowl are called a ‘confusion’.

I think they are an amazing bird.  We had a pair take refuge under our caravan for a few days when we camped down at Texas on the Qld/NSW border

Derek What type of grass are they using. It looks like a grass
they use to call november grass. we would collect it up against fences as it was the seed heads of the grass and was carried by the wind. It was very light and you could fill a big bag very quickly and the birds would go mad for it once you  it out for
them. we would also get it when we went to the finch society meeting. they would sell it along with other stuff for the  aviary birds.
fond memories are coming back. Would love to see them all in the wild.
regards Kev

Don’t know much about grasses but that certainly seems what it is.  Maggie calls it tumbleweed as before the drought it was everywhere and often blew in on the wind and piled up against the house.

Yes that would be the grass. They called November grass because it was around the month of november it would appear. And they kind of weave it. Another great thing was to watch the willy wag tails collecting the spider webs and the horse hair off the barbed wire fence to make their nests.
I remember them putting out the lint from the clothes dryer for the little birds to put into their nests.

Thanks for that Derek. It is confusing why there are so many of them roaming around up on the tablelands here. We have seen them in a number of places and they don't seem to be owned by anyone.

We used to use the November grass when we had our big finch aviary; they used to really like it for nest building.

Thanks for the photograph Jeff. Yes that the November grass I was talking about that we use to give to the finches.
I cannot see the finches carrying around the tumble grass in Dave's photograph.
It would be a real pain trying to that mess up Dave.

In the garden I have an old horse drawn plough as an ornament and the double bars regularly plonk themselves on it.

Managed to get this photo this morning of the pair building the nest.  They are still carting straw in there. When I see them carrying small feathers I will know it is getting finished

Hi Derek
What a great photo. I think the finch on the left would be the
mom she looks like she would be ready to start lying eggs.
They look very healthy What I remember they only take a day to build a nest.
It would be great that they keeping back back into your garden when they want to breed.

Kev, I haven’t seen them for a while, only these two, but we regularly had a small flock of up to about a dozen come in to feed on the seed I put out.

I think you are right about the female. She is looking very plump.

Very disillusioned at the moment.

Seems a crow/magpie/butcherbird or something else found the double bars nest.

The top is gone and the adults are nowhere to be seen.  Cry

We have both grey and pied butcherbirds here and while I do enjoy seeing them as well as listen to their song they do play havoc at times.  We have lost quite a few young birds to them.

The Double Bars have returned to the yard to feed.  At one stage I counted 15 of them.

The Crested Pigeon is half of the pair nesting in a grevillea.

Before I woke up Maggie said we had about a dozen Corellas out there.

Hi Derek
Great to see the birds are back for you. We have had a lot of birds here around the lake, including about 50 wood ducks, spoon bills, mallard ducks it appears that all have gone except for 3 wood ducks. I was lucky enough to see a pair of Plume whistling ducks a couple of days ago. The wetlands here now have water again so I will have to get down and see what is there.  regards Kev

Kev, between us and the town of Laidley there are a series of small lagoons.

Had the grandson here the week before Christmas and like me a keen birder.

We did a lot of looking in that week and in fact recorded 53 different species around the Lockyer Valley within 20 minutes drive from home however around the lagoons we estimated at least 1000 Plumed Whistling Ducks.  In fact I haven’t seen that many in the same area since I visited Kakadu a few years back.

Since the rain not a single one to be seen.

While they are a beautiful bird I don’t particularly like the Wood Ducks coming into feed.  They have beaks like shovels and just scoff everything.

These two practically live here now but we can get 12 to 15 of them at times.

I put a feeding station just outside the back patio (about three steps away) on the retaining wall hoping to attract the finches in close as they were being harassed by the bigger birds out on the lawn.

It worked.  Although only 6 in this photo there were 15 there before I could grab the camera.

Watched this morning as the peewees were building their mud nest on the street light outside our house.

I wonder if they realise they are going to be sitting under a light all night.  Shocked

Moved the bird bath out into the open and the birds are quickly enjoying it although the double bars are very flighty.  It is only a metre from the back patio

Thanks for for the great photos.
Yes the double bars would not like the bird bath being out in the open. On the other hand the peewee  would really enjoy it.

Our peewees are now sitting on eggs.

Was quite interesting for a while yesterday as they were both standing on top of a post gazing towards a Moreton Bay Fig Tree several hundred metres away.  In the fig tree was a Koel calling out.

The Koel is a cuckoo and don’t build their own nest and love tipping peewee eggs out and dropping their own egg in the nest.

Interesting times ahead for this pair I think.

Raining here this morning hence the dull colours in the photo

Because of the lack of trees here Dave we don’t get them nesting yet.  I have quite a few shrubs that are getting around the three metre height so will not be long I expect.

thanks for the photo. Don't they make a great  looking nest.
I think all birds stay awake while they sit on eggs in case
they get attacked. I think it would be more dangerous for them when the light is shining.

They are still just sitting. No feeding young yet.

We were away from home last week so I am curious if the Koel got to lay and egg up there.  Will be watching closely at the young.

We have had 2 pair of Blue Faced Honey Eaters in our yard the past 10 or so days. Not seen them around in years.  The Channel Bills have been chased off by the Butcher Birds. We now have about 5 Bush Turkeys parading through our yard.  Two of which are maybe only a week old.

The trouble with Butcher Birds is they kill all the little birds; they aren't welcome in our yard.

We have movement.  Only one peewee left in the nest.  Got a photo of one out in the neighbours yard.  Parents are busy screening at them  Smiley

Well we have an empty peewee nest and a couple of very frantic parents around.

The highest point here is the TV aerial on the house and one of them seems to be perched there most of the time on lookout duty.

I reckon if you were to take the feathers off they would be smaller than a sparrows egg underneath.

Cute little buggers.

What bird book do you have Kev?  I have always known the Apostlebird as a different bird altogether.

Hi Derek
my book 1981 -1982 edition of "A field Guide to the birds of
australia" by Graham Pizzey  Illustrated by Roy Doyle
I also have  A field guide to nests and eggs of Australian birds
by Gordon Beruldsen  1980 edition
and Photographic field guide Birds of Australia by  Jim Flegg.
Derek further info. The apostlebird is listed in Pizzey book separate as is the same bird as is shown in your message.
That is a bit strange but your drawing is what I know as Apostlebird

They are good books take them with me when away in the caravan

Have always found Apostle Birds to be very friendly little critters.

Have pulled up in a gravel pit in the middle of nowhere and within no time a flock have been hopping around us.

Great photos Dave.

The Brown Honeyeater having a bath.  Boy he is quick.  Too quick for me.

I have estimated the flock of Double Barred Finches has now grown to around 30.  So pleasant to see them all over the yard.  Not unusual to see that feeding tray in the background chockers full with them.

Striped Honeyeater in the grevilleas this morning.  This lone bird has been hanging around here at home for a while now.

Only the second time I have seen one.  The first was at Menindee Lakes in NSW.

I moved one of the seed blocks out onto the new fence and it didnt take long for the Pale Headed Rosellas to find it.

Also the crested pigeon numbers have been increasing.

Here is an interesting one.  The Pale Headed Rosellas were back today and brought a mate with them.

I thought yesterday that their colours were not overly bright so put it down to them being juveniles.

If you look at these pics you can see two have some orange/red spotting and one has an orange/red hue to part of the head.

From what I know this is usually a sign of interbreeding with the Eastern Rosella.  While we are in the northern range for the Eastern I have never seen one up here so finding this quite interesting.

I still think they are juveniles as I have seen some very brightly coloured ones here before.

This is a Brown Honeyeater.  I was playing a recording of his voice and he few across and landed on the top of my iPad.

If you watch him take off and fly towards me you will then see his tale in the top right of the video.

Amazing little bird.

Something really phenomenal happened today Jeff.  I was standing in the kitchen making a cuppa and he flew in the back door and through the lounge room, landed on the kitchen bench, looked at me for a couple of seconds then bolted back out the door again.

I was dumbstruck I can tell you.

LOve seeing the bright colours of the lorikeets. We have both the Raindow and Scaly Breasted. Quite a few Grevilleas and Callistamons flowering so seeing a few of them.

Many years ago I always though lorikeets only ate nectar but more and more over the years noticed they will eat seed.

Sometimes you can look until you are blue in the face and still miss things.

Decided to unscrew the lid off my parrot nesting box up on the shed today and low and behold going by all the bird poo in there and a few feathers something has nested and now flown the coop.

I am guessing the pale headed rosellas as two parents and three juveniles are regular in the yard these days although we do have a number of lorikeets here as well.

Must admit I was completely stunned.

I was so disappointed I missed them Kev.  The experts say the hole on the box should face north east so that puts it facing away from the house. Distance from house to shed about 60 metres.

Have never seen a bird on top of the box or on the roof of the shed so they were certainly cunning about it.

Hi Derek
They are great photographs, I appreciate you taking them.
The photo of the double bars is the one I like as it brings back memories of when I  had a collection of many different types
of finches.

Kev, when you had them breeding, did they build a complete nest as in the wild or use a nest box??

Hi Derek
When I was a kid we had an aviary and we got wild may bush
and put dry grass mostly that long length of couch and the birds would come down onto the ground and take the grass back to the nest. Was always great to just to sit and watch. The two parents would only take about a day to build.
We had finches in my young married life and we joined the Qld F inch Society and we then bought nest boxes made from ply from them. We would also go out and collect November grass and put it down for them. They love that
to build as it is a very soft grass. the couch was also very good. I think you would have those grasses near you.
There is a lot more things you can feed and also collect for nesting material  Let me know if you want to know more.

I was wondering if hanging a few nest boxes here in the shrubs might encourage them to nest.

I have a new bird in the garden.  I am calling it for a juvenile male White-winged Triller.  His full black feathering not complete on neck and back

First spotted him yesterday however he was still around today and managed a couple of photos and a quick video.

Blowing a gale again out here but he seems quite happy flitting around the shrubs.

Apologies for the weird sound on the video.  It is the slide on the Tele lens.

Had a female Zebra Finch flying with the Double-bars today.

They are not usually seen around here so not ruling it out as an aviary escapee just yet until I see a few more.

Hi Derek
Pretty quiet here for birds. I have not seen any wrens for a while. There are a few ducks around the lake. It looks like
the birds have breed their young and then  moved on.

Hi Derek
How did your bird counting go ?
On my walking Peggy the pug this morning I spoke to the two ladies in the village who count the birds here. They told me the birds are not here this year. The day they did the count they only saw some mannikins and some red brows. There is about 15 ducks (black ducks and wood ducks) around the lake here.

Kev, I didn’t do an official count but I think a combination of some regular seed and water together with the native flowering trees seems to keep a constant number of them here.

The rosellas have left the nest.  Haven’t seen the young for a while but the two parents are still regulars.

Here are some photos.

A Sacred Kingfisher was in the yard yesterday.  Have only seen it on and off but has been around here for a couple of years.

Also this morning I noticed the chatter of a Willie Wagtail under my side verandah when I woke up.  Went out to investigate and they are building a nest there.  About 3 metres from my chair in the TV room.  Last photo was taken through the glass door.

We had 14 mm of rain since Wednesday and the place is greening up well and I expect we will see more over the next few days.

Been busy planting.  Now have a mulberry tree, brown Turkey fig tree, choko vine, two paw paw trees, red & white grape vines, yellow and black passion fruit, orange and lemon trees.

Yep, we spent Saturday night looking after Grandkids on north side of Brisbane.  Last night when we got home there was 18.5 mm in the rain gauge.

What was all brown now has a tinge of green.

Waiting for it to dry out a bit this morning then into the mowing.  Smiley

Exciting today to see the Willie Wagtails building again. This time just outside our bedroom door and again up on a pergola beam.

No photos yet as not wanting to disturb them.

I am starting to believe that my Willie Wagtails are not very experienced nest builders.  They keep trying to nest on top of a 75mm wide beam and as such nothing to anchor the nest.

The new one has now fallen down as well.

Will be interesting to see where they go next.

I was concerned right from the beginning when I put the nest box up that this could occur.

Yesterday noticed two Indian Mynas in and out of the nest box.  Investigation revealed they had nested and laid eggs.

Sadly they had to be destroyed and the nest removed as they are an introduced pest.

Very disappointed as only last week I saw the rosellas up near the nest on the roof so expect they have been evicted by the mynas who are well known for destroying native birds eggs and taking over their nests.

Beautiful colour of those eggs.
Can’t have Indian Mynas breeding though.

Those Mynas are mongrel things and they are spreading over more and more country.

Have been trying for sometime to track down and get a decent photo of the Plum-headed Finch.  Success today on a birdwatching walk at Atkinson Dam and about as good a photo you could ever want.

The Whistling Plumed Ducks and Masked Lapwings were beside a small dam on the side of the road on the way home.

Met some great birdwatchers today who put my camera gear to shame with what they had.  Lenses 6 to 8 times bigger than mine  Shocked

Good photos; I have never seen Plum-headed Finches in the wild. We had them in our big native finch aviary when we had it and they bred like rabbits.

Hi Derek
Thank you mate, I appreciate the photographs very good.
Those ducks here saw only one  I hoping if there is a pair they are nesting   I hope not nesting lake side as the lake is full due to the rain we have had.

That would be great to see Derek. One of the biggest thrills I've had when it comes to seeing birds was to see Gouldians in the wild in the NT; just beautiful.

With the amount of fish each bird would need to survive you would wonder if there was enough fish there to sustain them.

Hi Derek
I reckon it would be good to find a water hole in the bush  on a property some where you could camp and watch the birds when they came down to the water

Jeff touched on his experience with the Gouldian Finches in the Territory.  Has for many years been one of my goals to do just that and watch them come into drink.

When I was living in the territory years back I did see many finches up there but never the Gouldian.

I do enjoy watching finches.

Yes they are the best. Always enjoyed them in the wild in large flocks. I would enjoy being able to see that sight once again.
When I was a kid I would give them nesting material to them   in the aviary  I would sit for hours watching them build their nests and and listen to them calling each other.
They were great breeders.

It seems I have won against the Common Mynahs.  The Pale-headed Rosellas are back inside the nest box.

This is the male standing guard while the female is inside scratching around.

That photo has been floating around for a while, Dave.  It is from West Aussie.  There is also one appearing regularly around the Forest Lake/Greenbank area here in south east Queensland.

They are what is known as melanistic. The colouring goes black.

Not seen it in person.

I need to pay more attention I think as I only just noticed this one.

I would say this is a Double-barred Finch nest and from the amount of faeces in and around the nest they have had babies and all left the nest.

Only about 15 metres from the back door of the house.

Have my young Grandson staying for a holiday at present and he excitedly came in today after taking this photo on his iPad of a couple of Cockatiels feeding in the backyard.

A first for us here.  Have seen them in other parts of the Lockyer but not here.  Hopefully they will hang around and bring a few mates with them.

This is amazing, the Double-barred Finches have built a nest in our rose garden this week.  They are still working on it and no eggs as yet.

I renamed this.  Hope you don’t mind Kevvie as it has gone way beyond your original post.

Have noticed the Pale-headed Rosellas hanging around and before when I went u to the shed one flew out of the nesting box so I grabbed the ladder and had a look.

First egg of the clutch.  Quite exciting.

In the next short while will build a few more nest boxes and scatter then around the yard.

Also going to build a bird feeder station instead of casting seed all over the ground.  The dogs are eating the finch seed so need to lift them up a bit as well.

Busy, busy

Hi Derek
I was thinking that the birds would have a few eggs by now as they would lay a egg every other day (lay one day then miss one day then lay the next day)
I hope they have a health clutch of eggs and produce some lovely birds.

Actually I just counted the days and 8 since the first one so yes, if an egg every second day then could be more as another one due tomorrow.  Will wait another week before looking again.

Hi Derek
It is always exciting to see the eggs had the birds have laid
I once had over 400 budgies ,30 nest boxes every day I would check the eggs and if there were babies and before they got too old I would have to put the ID legs rings on them. Great fun which I miss.

These photos are a first for me.

It is a Restless Flycatcher.  Have seen them out and about before but never this close.  The first photo is it sitting on the chimney of the Ozpig just outside the back door.

Pretty chuffed with these.

Attached YouTube video I have titled “Friendly Double-barred Finches.

Quality is not that good as taken on the phone.  These little blokes now wait for me to scatter seed in the yard and their fear of me has somewhat lessened.  In the video I am only a few metres from them.

Gee there is a swag of them. We had a pair of Plumhead Finches at our camp a few days ago; it was good to see them.

A new Double-barred Finch nest in a Grevillea in the front yard.  This is a new location so quite exciting.  It is still under construction.

Jeff, the Plum-headed Finch numbers are overall increasing here in the Lockyer Valley but not on our side which is the east.  Have only ever seen one here in the yard and it was a lone bird on the back fence just after we moved here six years ago.

Around Atkinson Dam where I like to do a bit of bird watching there are quite a few small flocks.

Kev, I’ll drag the ladder out tomorrow and have a look.  Don’t like disturbing them too much as when I look I need to unscrew the lid.

I have some ply up in the shed and am going to make some smaller boxes shortly to see if I can attract some of the lorikeets to nest.

Great to see them nesting in the new spot Derek. It's great having the birds around. I was hoping to see some Diamond Firetails again this trip but didn't see any when we were in their range. We have only ever seen them once some years ago now at Glenn Riddle Reserve north of Tamworth.

Had a look in the Rosella Nest.  Only two hatched out of the five eggs and without touching them the last three look clear.

I don’t think male could be real fertile as often over the last two years we have seen infertile eggs.

At least these two are looking quite healthy.

I haven’t seen them since I was a kid.  We lived at Ebenezer in NSW and they used to nest in the paddock next door.

Stay safe down there.

I would love to see them in the wild again for sure. Thanks Derek; we are camped out and in the sunshine so hope we avoid any covid that maybe around. Who knows when the border will ever open for us to get back to QLD.

It would be nice to see other finches come into feed.  Since being here I have seen a Plum-headed Finch and a Chestnut-breasted Mannikin as well as several Zebra Finches but they all seem much more flighty than the Double-bars.

Sitting here listening to a Pacific Koel (Storm Bird) over in a neighbours tree.  First one of the season.

They don’t come into our yard as they seem to prefer the larger trees.

Was sitting in the lounge before when I noticed a couple of Double-barred Finches darting in and out of a dark looking area of one of the trees just outside the back door with straws. See the first photo.

Went out and and there was a new nest just about finished.  See second photo.

Third photo is of a nest of a pair of Superb Fairywrens (Blue Wren) about three metres from the garage door.  They have three babies about four days old.  Will try for a photo of the babies in a couple of weeks as don’t want to overly disturb them.

Must be that time of the years as we also have a Magpie-lark (Pee Wee) starting to build a nest on the street light out the front of the house.  Will get a photo when I get the big camera out.

So good to have them nesting in your gardens. We came home from our trip just before Christmas and a pair of Pee Wees had a nest on where our electric service wire attaches to the house. They raised two young ones.

I must say they were much more welcome than the bee hive that had been built in the downstairs wall of our house. Shocked

Got a great photo today of the female wren heading towards the nest with a grub for the babies.

Also a great one of a Brown Honeyeater.

The Magpie Larks appear to be sitting on eggs as well.

Isn’t this one of the cutest little birds.  This is a fledging Superb Fairywren.  So young that it’s tail feathers haven’t grown yet.

In the first pic it was yelling at dad to come feed it.

It seems we have several of these nesting around the garden.  Nests are often difficult to find.

This one isn’t from the nest I put the photo of up the other day.  They are still tiny.

Some photos a bit blurry as I was taking them through a fence.

This is why I get so excited at all the birdlife we have managed to attract to our place.

The photo is from Google Street View and would be just over six years old.  It shows our empty block just after we built the shed up the back.  As you can see it was just a bare block back then.

We stored all our furniture in the shed and travelled around in the van while the house was being built.

All the gardens have been built and planted since then.

There are young in the Double-barred Finch nest as mum and dad are in and out all the time feeding.

Even though I can get in position to see the opening of the nest with the tele lens do you think they would let me get a photo.  Nooooo.

A while back I planted a miniature climbing red rose to go over the bird feeder and this little bloke looked so neat in there before.

The Magpie-larks have just started to feed their young.  Not big enough yet to lift their heads above the edge of the nest.

A covey of Brown Quail in the garden today.  I have glanced quail here before but this is the first time I have had to get a photo.

They walked away from me and got caught in the corner of the fence.

Amazing how many different species we are getting here.

It was a dairy farm and the paddocks quite bare.  In saying that this whole area has been cleared and a lot of new estates gone in so I suppose they have been displaced and are moving.

Just happy they can find refuge here.

When Maggie and I returned from our trip the garden was a bit of a mess. The ground was just about bare and the trees with very few leaves.

Then the rains came and I started pruning and taking care.  Bird baths were cleaned out and filled.

I remember walking around that first day back and saying to Maggie, there is not a bird sound anywhere.

Well it didn’t take long for them to return.  Finches, wrens, honeyeaters, pee wees, magpies, lorikeets, rosellas, pigeons, doves and many more including the terrorist mynahs.

Wasn’t surprised to see the crested pigeon building their nest and this morning she is sitting tight so they must have eggs.  I can see the nest from the back pergola.

Great to have the birds around. It has been dry up here on the Tablelands (maybe soon to be very wet) and we have had seed out for the finches and also a bird bath. Red Brows, Double Bars and some Chestnut Breasted finches come for a free feed. A number of doves and pigeons also and we have the odd Bower bird and the one was displaying which was good to see. Willy Wagtails, Pee Wees and Sunbirds are nesting in the yard and even in an open shed. We have a resident flock of a dozen or so Curlews that live here also. Love having all of them around.

Kev, I weakened and bought a pot saucer.   Grin

Didn’t take the double bars long to locate it. Pigeons have been giving it a hiding as well.

It is out in the open beside the bird bath and I can see it from my chair in the lounge.

You can fix that problem with the bigger birds by placing a rabbit netting dome over the dish the little birds just hop in and out.

Yes we do Derek and have had them nest under the roof of the front patio and also in an open shed. I have attached a few photos of them; sitting in the nest, some babies and one of a cock bird on my door while I was sitting in the car. I have also attached a photo of a couple of baby Curlews as the parents nest here each year.

Great photos, thanks.

Always surprises me the length of the legs on those little Curlews when they stand up.

Have never seen one here in the Lockyer.  Not even heard one at night.

Great to have the birds in and around your gardens Derek. We have planted 20 native trees around our shack we are building up here. Once finished we hope to plant more trees and scrubs which will help bring in more birdlife.

We had this little Bush Turkey in our garden, it is hard to see, but it was about the size of a quail. Guessing a couple of days old.
He is still around in the garden, don’t know how he is going with all the rain though.

Twice we had the Mistletoe Birds successfully nest in one of our roses just near the front door.  Three babies at a time.  On the third occasion she laid three eggs and disappeared never to be seen again.

Only ever saw the male once.

On hot days she sat like this with her head out of the nest all the time.

They make a beautiful nest.

Have yet to see one in our yard however this morning I estimate six Pheasant Coucals calling in the hill behind us.

Makes a pleasant change from the Koel that has taken up residence in the neighbours old Moreton Bay fig tree.

It is an odd thing. When we moved from Sydney to the Barossa it never occurred to us that we would miss some of the sounds that we had grown up with.

Spring and summer mornings aren't the same without a number of Koels sing out across the valleys. That has been replaced by distant roosters, which I do like.

Most surprisingly, we missed the deafening cacophony of millions of cicadas.

That has been replaced by the continuous birdsong of hundreds of unknown (to us) birds. Certainly less deafening but I still miss the cicadas - they ARE summer.

They are in full voice up here on the Atherton Tablelands at present.

Last year at one point in the summer whenever I mowed (every five days or so that time of year) I would have cicadas flying all around me and landing on me; I thought it must have been the sound of the mower attracting them??? They would bomb dive from all directions.  Grin

We do not get cicadas here but I know in some campgrounds they have been so loud that I have had to turn my hearing aids off.

Took this photo when camping at Thora in the Hunter Valley, NSW.

The young turkey is still in the front garden, we get a glimpse of it from our front veranda.
Last year there was a pair of Pheasants nest behind my shed, I tried to get a look at the young but I could not find them in the long grass. They were in a section that I never mow, two steep for me and my ride on mower.

The Koels are back.

Sitting here listening to the first Koels of the year calling.   I know some don’t like them but I do.  They are an amazing bird

Young crested pigeons have left the nest.  This one is having a break outside the laundry door.

They breed just about constantly in the garden and usually one or two nests going at a time.

This year we have two pairs of Magpie-larks (Pee Wee) nesting on light poles in the street.  One out the front of our place and the other about 50 metres away at the neighbours.

Both have eggs I believe.  First photo here and second at neighbours.

Was very hot out there so they are not sitting down on the eggs.

Interesting this year is that when they were nest building we had quite a bit of activity from the Kole’s and Kole’s really do like Magpie-larks nests to drop an egg into.

So I will be watching as time progresses with intent to see if we end up with a Koel chick or two

Just started a new list for 2025 of the birds in our yard and surrounding area.

A quick walk around this morning say 7 different species.  Be interesting to see how it pans out.

I do have a total of 49 species listed since we came here.

The young Magpie-larks have fledged as did the other two nests in the area.  No Koels in the nests at all.  Good for the Magpie-larks but not the future of the Koels I guess.

Decided that for this one I would only add birds to the list if they are in our yard, our surrounding neighbours yards or flying over.

So far 17 species in three days.  Cool

I think there are three baby Willie Wagtails in the nest in the front garden but not sure as they won’t stand up and they don’t like being photographed.  Smiley

Must be getting close to flying.

Been a good breeding season here at home for the birds.

Currently we have baby, Pee Wees, Willie Wagtails, Superb Fairywrens, Brown Honeyeaters, Crested Pigeons, and Double-barred Finches flitting around the yard and a few days ago a family of Masked Lapwings (Plovers) visited for a couple of days with their babies.

We have been invaded by (literally) thousands of Little Corellas (Cacatua sanguinea) and Galahs (Eolophus roseicapilla).

They arrive each year but due to the dry and the fact the vineyards irrigate they are here in force.

The bird scarer cannon started up about 6am today - this was my backyard at 6:30am.

We camped at Gum Bend Lake near Condobolin in 2019 and the number of corellas there was hiuge.  Fortunately for me I can turn my hearing aids down but many were complaining.

This pic is one of the many flocks zooming around.

Quite excited.  My first ever sighting and photos of the Blue-winged Kookaburra.

We don’t get this bloke down around home so pretty chuffed about it.

Not only that was here in the caravan park

Another first for me as they are a northern bird.  A Green Oriole.

Not the best pics as it wouldn’t move from it’s perch and best seen on a big screen.

Pulled into a roadside rest area and at first thought I was looking at quail but then I saw the crests.

Another first sighting for me - Spinifex Pigeons.

I stalked the pair of them for ages but couldn’t get them to turn around.

Happy with what I got though

After a week away the Double-barred Finches are flocking to some seed and water.

As for the feathers, they are what is left over after something grabbed a feral pigeon just before we left.  Not sure if it was a falcon or a fox as I found the bird in another part of the yard and the head and guts had been taken.  Everything else was there.  Both a fox and a falcon will do that although a falcon will often eat more.
