Just wondering if I could perhaps get a bit of wisdom ?

Decided over Xmas that would like to use CO more often when away caravanning, primarily to bake, such as making scones and breads, pizza etc.

As we tend to use caravan parks, I obtained a camp oven mate and a gas burner ring and watched a few Youtubes about how to use, but....

everything I try and cook in it ends up with a black/burnt bottom.   Have tried adjusting the heat up and down, trivets in CO etc (bedourie) but not real successful, everything I try still seems to burn on the bottom.

I can do OK with heat beads (old frypan method) and achieve good outcomes, but just seemingly not on the gas/COM system.

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on using the COM that I could try.

Hi Frank and welcome to the forum.

When they first started making Camp Oven Mates I was  asked to test them out for Southern Metal Spinners.

I had both sizes and only ever used cast iron camp ovens and I think that would be a huge difference than using spun steel like the Bedourie.  Even with cast iron though you had to get that flame down as low as possible to prevent burning on the bottom of things.

The whole concept and design of them is to allow the heat to circulate.

All I could think of with your Bedourie is to use something to lift it as high as you can to get that direct heat off the bottom of it to stop the burning.

Others here may have some other ideas.

Cheers.

Welcome to the forum Frank.

I'm with Derek on this.
Reduce the flame intensity and raise the Camp oven higher from the flame.
I do not use a Bedourie, so I can't comment on that

Cheers

Frank, I always use a trivet inside my oven when cooking cakes, damper or a baked piece of meat, stops (or lessens) them getting a burnt bum.
Rob.

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd

Hi Frank.I have a Camp Oven Mate but never used it. I bought it because  it came with a camp oven which I wanted.
As Poddy said use a trivet to get it off the bottom and use a cake pan to cook in.
I would also be adding some water to the oven to create steam. The steam is very hot and will cook your food.

You do not say if you are using a one or two ring burner, if one forget it and if two just the small ring as low as possible.

And the other advise re trivet and pan is excellent.

Please keep us advised on how you go as this will help us all in the future. Cheers Bear

When I use a gas burner in my choffer, I made a heat diffuser from a piece of 12mm thick punch plate steel. I then sat the campoven on that, and it worked well.
