It was the “original” across the top movie. 1955.  Well and truly before the likes of Malcolm Douglas.

Keith passed away at the age of 85 in 2012.

An old Buick straight 8, would've needed a petrol bowser permanently hooked up. Always remember Geoff Carter saying, "A good driver in a 2WD will go further than a poor driver in a 4WD", he went where no man went before in an old 2WD Peugeot ute in the 50's and 60's.

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd

Remember it well
Also the Leyland Bros west to east crossing.
Saw it the pictures with my grandad.
I was only about 10. That is where my love of the great outdoors started.
Real adventures.

After seeing the film I got his book from the library.
PD..he actually replaced the original Buick petrol engine with a Perkins diesel. In the book he relates how, on the way back to Perth, it "blew" a piston which he removed and completed the journey on 5 cylinders. A great read.
The popularity of his film shows how much so many of us envy the lifestyle he followed. A very enterprising man and how times have changed.
TBF...The Leylands actually followed a west to east track established by Reg Sprigg the geologist who established SANTOS. He was the first to make a motor crossing prior to the major oil and gas exploration coming shortly after.
The book about his life "Reg Sprigg.. Rock Star" is a very interesting read.

life is a bed of gidgee coals and a camp oven
