Good morning all.
I am new to posting on this forum, but have some questions about a camp oven I was given yesterday on a job.
It is a Falkirk 24 inch oven in relatively good condition. I found it sitting on a stump while having lunch. The lady said that she thought there might be a lid for it but she would have to look for it if it's still around.
We do a lot of camp oven cooking and hopefully I can put this one to gentle use, but I may have to manufacture a lid.
The history on this is very hard to find, but I have been told that it is most likely a Scottish built oven.
I would love to know the approximate age and any other handy info?
Plus (as a loooooong shot), if anyone knows of a lid laying around out there?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Amazing piece of cast iron. Not too many of those left around at all. Yep, they are an old Scottish cast as far as is known.

Good luck with finding a lid for it.

That's a big old oven you have there. I would be keeping in contact with that lady and see if she can locate the lid. As Derek said is was made by the Falkirk Iron Company, Falkirk Scotland. Hard to give an age but could quite possibly be from the 1800's. The camp ovens were made in sizes 6" through to 20" in 1" increments and a 22" & 24".

They are beautiful old ovens and I have included a photo of our 20" Falkirk.

I am certainly hoping that the lid turns up, but it will be what it will be.

I’m not much into the history of COs, very much into the camping/cooking side of it.

Thanks Aart.
I am currently cleaning it up and hope to cook in it regardless.
I have just found a small crack down one side in the cleaning process and while it is disappointing to a degree, it is not a great surprise given the age of the oven and where I found it.
I hope to braze it up and thought that id worse comes to worse with the lid not being found, I might be able to manufacture one out of a plow disk and steel strap.
I would love to cook a large roast and veggies all together in it

So.
I wire brushed it, soaked it in vinegar for 36hrs, pressure washed it, wire brushed it again, scrubbed it with steel wool and soapy water, rinsed it, dried it. Warmed it in the sun and coated it in dripping.
Here it is with my #13 Harding & Sons.

Then it was on a gentle fire for around 5 hours to help season.
I put some large bacon in to make sure it wasn't too hot - - - Which I promptly ate.
Followed later by some chicken skewers - - - Which we all ate.
