Have had these a number of times over the years but never cooked them.  Recipe sourced from several on the internet and to my taste.

Ingredients
1/2 cup sugar
1 large piece of orange peel
8 whole cloves
1 stick cinnamon
2 cups red wine (I used a Shiraz)
1/2 cup water
2 tsp vanilla extract
4 bosc pears

Method
Find a pot that the pears will fit in snuggly.  Place all ingredients except pears into the pot and bring to a simmer.  Peel pears and place into the pot and keep it simmering.  Cook for 25 minutes rotating the pears around every 5 minutes.  Allow pears to cool in liquid.

When cool remove pears then strain it.  Return strained liquid to the pot, return to a simmer until reduced to a nice syrup.

We had them with vanilla ice cream.

Was walking through the shop today and they were putting all these pears out and my mind said, “Oooooooh, pears in red wine for dinner”.

Bought some and when I got home pulled up this recipe and cooked them.  Quartered the pears.
