For years going back you have been able to buy different types of potatoes.  Not anymore it seems.

Potatoes these days are watery and tasteless.

Is it just us or are others noticing it.

We have started eating Kipfler potatoes as at least they still have some taste

Hi Derek
Yes I have noticed a lot of breeds of potatoes have gone.
I remember being able to go to the shop and choice a breed
from the large number they had and away you went. But lately you go to the shop and you have to take what they have and it not much.

Supermarkets dont care about variety or taste of any fruit or veg. Their only concern is what travels and stores well......and what they can buy cheapest.
Should be able to grow good spuds at your place Derek. Potatoe growing was once a fairly large Industry in this area.....still a few doing it.
Your climate isn't that different. I just put in a small experimental lot the other day.
This is this years garlic harvest.

I can see that I am going to have to eventually grow more here.  That’s a nice haul of garlic there.

Yes Gatton was a big potato growing area but not so much anymore.  They are all now growing these “everyday” potatoes as they call them.  Roadside stalls no longer exist as they did either.

Did you know they even put an expiry date on the bags these days.  I remember as a kid Dad coming home with a sack of spuds that would last us for months.  These days a couple of weeks and they go off if not in the fridge.

That was one of the big things I remember when Maggie and I were in Tasmania a few years ago.  All of the roadside stalls with some of them selling anything like six different types of spud.

May I, respectfully, suggest that bagged potatoes should never be stored in the bag.

The tubers are still alive (that is why they grow eyes and sprout), so put them in a breathable material - hessian or even paper works and store them in a dry, dark and cool place.

The should last for months or more.

It is why that when they bulk transport them they tend to be in hessian sacks, just like the old days...

Not here in the Lockyer anymore.  They used to be bagged straight from the digger but now straight into large skip bins from the digger.  Saw the same in Tasmania.  In fact I was fascinated with the way they did it down there.

Typical Supermarket mentality, "All Rounders" and "Red" Potatoes .......do they think we are to stupid to want to know the proper variety names of them? Roll Eyes
If your getting the impression I don't like supermarkets much, you'd be on the right track.
