Hi ya! Hope your are all enjoying the cooler weather. I have a few Op shops I frequent as you never know what you’ll find. In St Vinnies the other day I came across a 12 inch skillet that I thought needed a better home than the bottom shelf of the pots and pan display. The first thing was to run it over and I thought I’d struck gold, when I saw Wagner! And a second glance I saw ‘made in China’ - damn! Was my first reaction. But, I carried it around the rest of the store for a while and it sort of grew on me. I needed a large skillet that wasn’t non-stick aluminium and the $15 dollar price tag was within my budget. I gave it a better inspection outside in the sunlight and it was rust free, still had the original ‘seasoning’ an looked like it had been only use a couple of times. I have two Chinese spinifex camp oven and thought that for $15 I’d give it a go.
So, here it is a few days later and I set about scrubbing the inside - and a bit of the outside - back to the nice grey cast iron colour.

Wasn’t too careful about what was on the bottom, just as long as all the sticky stuff was scrubbed off. Seeing as there was no rust I just hit it with a Selleys BBQ grill cleaner and steel wool - for the last time I promise - and a bit of elbow grease and about an hour later it was being wash in clean water and but on the BBQ to dry.
I use Rice bran oil to season.
Heated to dry off and then a thin coat of oil, 30 min at 425 ish. And a cool down.
Cycle one.

I think another 3 cycles will get it to a usable dark colour ready for some serious camp fire cooking.some nice lamb chops me thinks.

I made a stainless steel hot area a while back to house my Camp-ovens and now I’ll have to think about retasking the one on the other side of ‘The Taj’. Might have to reassign the space the flat plate takes up under the gas cooker.

Not quite finished yet but, the skillet has gone through the golden brown colour and is getting to a very nice shiny black. It’s still a little splotchy though I put that up to my inexperience in doing this. I’m wondering if this was made in the same factory as my spinifex 12inch as the lid from that fits perfectly. This has opened up completely new sphere of cast iron cooking possibilities. Not that I’m a big fan of the American skillet recipes there are a couple of stand outs which I would love to try. But now things like pizza, scrolls both savoury and sweet, and of course now I have an awesome steak cooking skillet (though I would find it in serious competition with my vertical fire grill.)
Time to do one more cycle and call it a day. I’ll post the final images later this afternoon.

This is after 5 cycles. I’m very happy how it came up. It also has it’s own space in the Canopy under the Esky.
