I was mindlessly browsing one of the Chinese sales sites and came across this beauty.  A 5kW diesel heater for $160!

Too good to be true, eh?

Look at the noise rating 75dB, apart from no mention of what scale it is, 75dB is pretty much a lawn mower...

Honda 2.2 generator is only about 53.

Mind you I have heard some pretty loud diesel heaters on vans at times.  Some gas ones are also pretty loud.

It is a little misleading to most people to quote dB as it is a logarithmic scale not linear.

Every 3 dB increase doubles the measurement, in this case sound pressure.

So 75 - 53 gives us a 22db difference, lets say 21 to make it easier. 21 / 3 is 7. So the sound pressure doubles 7 times between 53 and 75. That is 128 times louder.

You can see how hearing gets damaged at high sound pressure levels and how annoying even a small increase is sound can be...
