The spun steel camp oven I used for the stew in this thread https://www.aussiecampovenforum.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1751191932 has seen much regular use, almost weekly, for a couple of years. On a Sunday I would do my variation on King Brown's "Pub Chicken" that would provide protein for lunches during the week.

The regular use had built up a nice shiny black patina due to the relatively gentle heat from the heatbeads.

When I used it in the firepit at Nyngan, it was a significantly greater heat.

When I gave the CO a proper clean and oil yesterday, I found the patina is flaking off as spun steel is wont to do.

I guess it is time for the wire wheel and to heat and re-oil it! (I won't say re-season as it is steel and not iron!

A little disappointing  Grin

They are notorious for doing that.  Still love my old spun steel oven.

I plan to use a brass wire wheel to remove the remaining patina and take it back to steel if necessary.

I am then going to give it a thorough clean. Once clean I will heat it up in the hooded BBQ to dry it and once it is hot I will give it a good coating of oil.  Once oiled I will heat it for a few minutes until the oil starts to smoke then I'll turn off the heat and allow it to cool inside the BBQ.

The final step is to build up a patina by using it!
