I find this old photo quite intriguing.  An old fella with his axe and a huge pile of mallee roots.

Mallee roots make great hot coals for camp oven cooking.

When I was in Wagga Wagga there was a restaurant I frequented called The Mallee Grill.

It was a smorgasbord for your salad and vegetables however you ordered your particular meat cut of pork, beef or chicken and they were grilled over charcoaled mallee roots.  It created an amazing flavour especially if the meat had been marinated.

The marinated rib fillet was amazing.

I use mallee charcoal in my kettle.

It is mostly above ground wood rather than the roots.

It burns hot, very hot and reasonably slowly.  So hot it burned a big old hole through my charcoal chimney in about two years (I actually bought the replacement just yesterday).

For better control I now use a mix of mallee and coconut heat beads

A bit of trivia. The US told Australia our iron ore was inferior. So we purchased our steel from them. But with the outbreak of WW2 they couldn’t supply Australia with weapons while they were neutral. Australia made tank barrels at the shearer machinery factory at Manum in SA. They were fired with mallee stumps and came out far superior to anything the US could produce. I read this in a vintage car magazine many years ago.

Very interesting Gordon.  I love old Australian history.  A lot of it is forgotten these days.
