What a play on words.

Noticed in some advertising that Coles are saying their Scotch Fillet Steaks are Carbon Neutral.

Did some digging and found all this online:

How Meat Becomes Carbon Neutral

Meat producers cannot eliminate 100% of their emissions directly, so they use a combination of reduction and balancing tactics:

On-Farm Reductions: Farmers change how they operate to lower the initial footprint. This includes using genetic selection for more efficient animals, managing pastures to improve soil health, and using feed additives (like specific seaweeds) that cause cattle to burp less methane.

Carbon Sequestration: Farmers plant trees and manage vegetation on their properties. These plants actively pull carbon dioxide out of the air and store it in the wood and soil, naturally offsetting some of the herd's emissions.

Carbon Offsets: For the remaining unavoidable emissions, the producer or retailer buys certified carbon credits. These credits fund environmental projects elsewhere (like wind farms or clean water initiatives) to balance out the rest of the meat's footprint.

Examples in the Market

Coles Finest Certified Carbon Neutral Beef
: In 2022, Coles became the first major Australian supermarket to launch its own brand of certified carbon-neutral beef, mapping the emissions from the farm straight to the shelf.

Five Founders Beef: Produced by the North Australian Pastoral Company (NAPCo), this was one of the first Australian beef brands to be certified carbon neutral by measuring its full supply chain and purchasing approved carbon credits.

So there you have it.   Smiley

If it relies on sequestration, it is a rort that hasn't be proven to be effective.

If it relies on carbon credits it is a rort propped up by the taxpayer.
