Some time back I entered into negotiations with a small Australian Foundry with the view to having some cast iron camp ovens made. The standard size I was looking at would be 12 inch wide by 6 inch deep. The lid will most likely have BULLOCK and AUSTRALIA cast into it or even OUTBACK and AUSTRALIA. To my knowledge there is no-one else making similar cast iron ovens in Australia. Please let me know if there is.

They will be individually cast from the one mould and not mass produced like the current Chinese models you find at most shops and only be available for sale direct from me, through the internet on my websites or on eBay.

Unfortunately being made the way they will be they would not be cheap (this is why most manufacturers are going offshore) however to me camp oven cooking is part of our heritage here in Australia andfor it to continue for future generations there is something in having camp ovens made here in Australia and not overseas.

The project stalled when I couldnt get enough interest however I am still keen to go ahead with it but don't want to end up with thousands of dollars worth of ovens sitting in my shed wasting away.

If the project was a success and the interest was there I could also look at a 15" model as well.

I am keen to hear your thoughts on it.

G'day Derek, I am a definite customer and will take a 12" one. Would like to see something like a kangaroo or  the outline of Oz on the lid to identify it as truly Australian and made here.
Hope to see the project came to fruition, good luck. Poddy Dodger

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd

Kangaroo sounds great.  Will keep that in mind.

G'day Derek, I've been thinking about it and of all my ovens the one I use most is a 10", it will take a small roast and vegies, a meat loaf in a baking tin or a damper; this is for two or even three people.  I only use a 12" or my Bedourie for chooks or bigger cuts of meat . What I'm suggesting is would'nt a deep 10" have more appeal then go to a 12" one if sales support it.
Just a thought.   Rob.

Rob

I was originally going for a 10" however a number of people wanted the 12".  Reason being that you need a 12" to fit in baking and muffin trays.  Another thought though.

I tend to agree with Derek.  To date I just have a 10" D.O.  After I got it I discovered/was introduced to this place with Derek's picture holding items baked in another pan.  The 12" does seem to be more versatile.

But Derek, I have to admit, I am unlikely to want to add one of these to my souvenirs of Oz  for my Aussie trip.  re. my top priority, he/she will be much larger and livelier and more costly than an Aussie D.O.

Hey Derek,

Have you checked with the folks at IDOS to see if there is any interest.

Did you receive your lodge yet?

Hi Doc

For some reason I cant post on IDOS.  I think it may have something to do with me downloading IE7.  However I did post on there a while back about this and yes there was some interest.

My Lodge "is in the mail" so to speak.  Expecting it in a couple of weeks.

Derek, Do you have an idea of what the price will be?
I would be interested if the cost is something I could afford by the time it was shipped to the USA.

Jerry, I think shipping from down your way pretty costly,  but I just got a 'fat' envelope from Oz today.  It weighed .136 kg or just about .3 lbs and cost the sender  $5.55  Oz$ or $4.23 USD.

BTW where are you?

& p.s.  the fat envolope had Camp Oven Cooking Made Easy with Tommo

It works both ways LK, I looked at buying a McClary cast iron camp oven in the US on eBay, the price of the oven was favourable but the price of postage even by sea was gynormous.
I've just paid $25.50 for an oven to come from Melbourne to Sydney, it weighed 9 kg ! Rob.

Maybe we should be asking the Aussies, Derek, Poddy Dodger...... to give us a link to help get info on shipping costs from Oz.

I know I'd expect to pay at least $30.00CAD for a Dutch oven to come to Newfoundland from Missouri..

& are you making plans to go visit down under?

Jerry/LK. If you look at this site you can calculate how much it would cost in $Au to sent a particular weight parcel to any international destination.

Folks

My 12 " Lodge Oven is on its way from the States at a cost of $55.00 US for postage.  Thats by snail mail that takes 6 to 8 weeks.  I could have had it sent by airmail at a cost of around $145 US.

Derek

Angry Darned thing better get here soon or I will start worrying.

Derek,

a) I've been wondering about that cost from the U.S.  Did that come from the Lodge factory, which is in Tennessee?  Or from further west?  It's a wide continent.  Only 4 time zones in the U.S., but 5 in Canada.

b)  If you start worrying about receiving it, let me assure you that if something comes to Newfoundland, delays often happen.

& if it gets delayed going through customs.........

Sorry, reality Derek.  Keep the faith.  It will get there.

Similar Jerry.  Will post a pic beside a Furphy when it gets here.  Check their site out.

https://secure.lodgemfg.com/storefront/products1.asp?idDept=1413&menu=logic

Mine is the 6 qt 12 inch.  They are not deep like a Furphy.

Jerry, may I suggest you put something re. location under your signature or something.  I put Newfoundland & Labrador.Ca because I want members to know I'm up here, not down under.

& I've picked up on the fact that you're in the U.S. by the times of your posts, but maybe others won't.

With that you're knowning what a Lodge looks like is more or less expected.

Well I thought I'd be clever and go to the APO and calculate the postage to the states for a 30 lb package but the parcel calculator only went to 250 grams.  If I was shipping a 30 lb box from the here in the states to Oz, it would cost;

   Airmail Parcel Post  4 - 10 Days      $148.90
    Economy (Surface) Parcel Post  4 - 6 Weeks  $57.00

35 lbs cost;
  Airmail Parcel Post  4 - 10 Days      $171.30
    Economy (Surface) Parcel Post  4 - 6 Weeks  $63.85

Dimensions: Max. length 42", max. length plus girth 79"

The above figures are in US Funds from the USPS.com.

By the way, any progress on making a Australian made oven, what size and/or the design on top.

I vote for at least a 12" and deep with a kangaroo and an outline of Australia on the lid.
