Look at the difference Heat Beads and another brand there is no comparison you can see which will burn longer and with more consistent heat.

I have never really compared them like that but the size sure is noticeable.

Yes, I can see what you mean.
But isn't a kilogram of one the same for the other?
Does the larger one burn longer than the smaller?
What about heat output/briquette?
If they both have a similar calorific value (J/kg.) does it make any difference?
Could be worthy of a controlled test?
interesting eh?

Good thought Mike.  People have their favourites over here, in brands, I mean.  I just buy what's in an area and cook.

Now, if I could get some dry weather on a day when I'm free to cook.......

Mikel,  You make a good point. I will do a comparison test and see how they do stack up in the heat department. The only thing with the smaller ones they may burn away faster.

Being a die hard "coals from the fire" man Ive taken a leap of faith.......
Ive been playing with the heat beads just in the last couple of days & the only other time I had entertained the idea I bought a bag of Redheads BBq fuel.

The first thing which stood out is the heat beads are all the same size thus all the same heat, the Redheads are a tube like shape & although the diameter is consistant the length of each piece is not, so I got un even heat & a lot more heat than the heatbeads due to the hollow section I think. thus they dont need the air circulation that heat beads do to stay alight.

been a hot coals bushman all of my life and still do some cooking that way at home in a converted 200 litre drum in my entertainment area nut I now also use gas with a camp oven mate I have a 12" and a 15"  that I use reg but I really struggle with heat beads thay never seem to want to work correctly and yes I will be fair and try a starter before I condemn them to banishment

Love the camp oven mates they reduce cooking time by i/4 at least and the control over the heat and cooking process is great

Had a shot at roast pork using Heat Beads on Sunday with very pleasing results.
2kg rolled shoulder pork, 2hrs cooked spot  on, although the Heat Beads where losing the heat after 2 hrs, I checked the pork at 1.5 hrs in case I had to use some back up beads all looked good.
I made a starter out of a 4ltr paint tin with the bottom cut out and my Weber as a base.

Looks good Murray. I cook with a similar set-up using a Camp Oven Mate and heat beads, to compensate for the beads losing heat after two hours I put my LPG burner underneath to crank the heat back up and "finish off" a baked meal especially pork.
With barbeque fuel I have been buying "Hot Shots" from Bunnings, they are as good as any and cheaper than most. Over the years I've bought the smaller rounder ones and found they are as useless as a hip pocket in your underpants, they don't give off any heat IF you can light them !!!

Thanks for your comment boys
Over the years I have struggled to light BBQ beads in the Weber, like getting them to burn all the same, one side would burn the other half alight. but with a bead starter all the same. Even though it is rough an ready it worked just fine. I heated up the C/O on the side burner on the BBQ before I put it on the beads so the cooking processes should start straight away. I am more than happy with the result. It means I can use the C/O all the more.  I thought the Weber might be just the thing to season a new C/O.

Derek's post,  Heat Beads are a brand name if you can't get them up there where you live let us know and I will see if can get some sent to you. Evan though they are self lighting I put a couple of fire lighters under to give it a good start. About 30min burn down down time and your away.

Furphy, read my previous post, "
Hot Shots"
which I buy at Bunnings are equal to the Heat Beads brand and cheaper, use a charcoal chimney to get them fired up, lots easier to use than a wood fire.

Still can't beat a big shovel full of coals from the fire though!

When I did my chook on the weekend I started the heat beads pretty much the same as Muzz, paint tin with the bottom cut out, sitting on a stainless steel gause over the ring burner. worked great!

I fired up about 1 doz, or more to start the chook & put some on another oven full of veg,
Then did what I should have done from the start.

dragged out the 44 cut in half & used the extra heat beads I had lit to get the fire going. Roll Eyes

Maybe I'm just a pyromaniac Grin Grin Grin

Hey Ive just noticed SPELCHECK on here well done Derek!
