C C Harding & Sons. Ballarat. I have several of these beaut ovens, they came in odd number sizes, 9", 11", 13", 15" and 17" and so I've been told the foundry closed down in about 1999 as it didn't meet WorkCover regulations, it was old and had a poor safety record. The ovens are quite heavy and robust, they had good legs, rounded ears, nice lid and handle and a good but not perfect finish however they didn't come with a bail when new, you had to make your own.

I think the tourist site Sovereign Hill at Ballarat has the original Harding molds with the intention of using them at some stage and casting a run of Sovereign Hill souvenir ovens. They have already made a few, I saw them on sale at the camping shop in Echuca a couple of years ago but and they were very rough so I didn't buy one, now I wish I had as they would be a collectors item.

No idea SB, but I'll ask around. They are not a common oven and my earlier post was my total knowledge about them.

Notice the writting on the 17" models in the photo are marked "C HARDING"
I read somewhere on here that it has something to do with the Foundry changing hands within the family.
It could have been Astro or "The Furph" who brought it up.

What would a 13" CC Harding be worth? I paid $40 for one at a swap meet and it is in real good condition. I dont  want to get rid of it because it would probably be the only piece of aussie iron i would ever be able to get my hands on but would like to now its value.

I lot more then that maloney. Good buying!

I'm no expert on the Harding ovens but a few here are. I spose it depends how bad some one wants it. Sky's the limit.

They're only worth what people are prepared at the time. There's too much inconsistency with prices these day's to put an actual value on them. I bought a 13" Harding oven on ebay last year for $50, the last one that was listed on ebay sold for $142 and was possibly a copy.
So I think it poses a tricky question to put a value on some of these cast iron collectables.
Just my thoughts,
Astro

Like Astro I bought a genuine 13" Harding last year, it had never been used and once I cleaned off the light surface rust it was as new. I was happy to pay $80 for it and don't think I overpaid so what's an oven worth ? That's up to you, the buyer.
I can and have walked away from some overpriced ovens I've seen in antique shops on my travels and I've given up buying on eBay however I now sell some of my "ordinary" ovens there.

Just a corrections to the post above.

The foundry was not closed down due to workcover or poor safety concern. It closed due to the retirement of the original son.

The foundry commenced operation in 1927. From memory we also made a larger oven in limited numbers. I think around 21".

Plenty of stuff I'd like to ask you H S, I've tried to find out about the Harding foundry thru the historical society in Ballarat but there is very little they could tell me. The mis-information re poor safety etc is what I was told by a bloke in another foundry !
I have several 13" ovens, one an old one with two round sprue marks on the base and the name under the lid, all the others are well marked with the name both over and under. I also have a nice 11" skillet with the name on the side.
Good ovens and I'd swap my Furphy's for them.

Talking today with the original son (Dad aka Alan), we think the first ovens were made in 1968.

Campovens were made in the following sizes
7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 17 and a couple of 21".

The smaller sizes were also made as casseroles with no legs and modified handles.

The foundry commenced in around 1923.

The name change from CC to C occured when the phones numbers in Victoria all went to 03 from 053

The foundry was started by Clyde Charles Harding and then taken over by 2 of the sons Bill (Clyde) and Alan. Clyde Charles passed away in 1966.

The caravan park in Korumba on the Gulf of Carpentaria has extensive selection of Harding campovens.

You're right Kev, plus I always get Karumba and Kuranda mixed up, not good if you were a long distance truck driver and didn't read the delivery dockets properly. Riverstone instead of Riverwood like I did once...

G'day HS good to see you here.
A lot of Australias history including the history of campovens and those who manurfactured them is disapearing rapidly.
Im wondering if you have any old photos of the Harding Foundry, Ovens being cast, or anything else of interest that you might post to this page.
I understand that Photos can be personal treasures and that you may not want them on public display. Any that you may wish to post would be greatly appreciated by the members of this board im sure.
Cheers SBB

I'm not 100% sure David but going on hearsay it was about '98 or earlier however that's only a guess. I came thru Ballarat late '98 and tried to find the foundry to buy a couple of ovens and no one I asked could point me in the right direction so I reckon it had closed down by then.
Going by the prices the last couple of Hardings brought on eBay (11" $383) I wish I'd bought a truck load.

Hi, Very interesting piece of history about the C C Harding foundry. I own a 13in oven and 13in pan. The lid from the oven also fits the pan. The pan is just fantastic and can cook up a feast. The lid also makes a great scrambled egg pan when turned upside down. I purchased my oven and pan direct from the foundry in the late 80's and had to order both so that they could be cast. I think I paid $100 for both. I note that a 11in oven went for $355 on ebay this March '10 which is a reflection of a great collectable product. But how could one part with a bit of history and the knowledge that you are cooking with Aussie thru blue. WWobbler

G'day Maloney.
I've been told the newer Harding ovens are easy to pick as they have a ten digit phone number on the lid which begins with 03 and not 053 like yours. Not sure which year we went to ten digit phone numbers so that baby of yours pre-dates that.
BTW what size is that one ? Some Hardings have the size on the lid, some don't.

G'day maloney, the more I look at all Harding ovens the more differences I see, they are all basically the same but with small changes, your 13 is different to the ones I have as it has no size on the lid and the lid handle is more rounded than mine are.
Same thing with other sized Hardings I have, they are all slightly different, some have the size on the lid the others don't, although they stuck with the same classic shape, molds were replaced and small changes crept in however putting an age on an oven is almost impossible. That's the way I see it anyway.

Fortunately there are still a few reasonably priced Harding's to be found out there around the traps. Recently, I picked up a 13” Harding in excellent condition from a secondhand goods/junk shop not far from where she was manufactured in Ballarat. At the time when I was fossicking through the shop I nearly missed her, because she was partially hidden in a dark corner of the shop behind a heap of other stuff and only a partial glimpse of a leg and the bottom edge of her base alerted me to her presence. When I pulled her out into the light, she appeared quite dusty and I would say she had been sitting there for quite sometime, however on closer inspection and apart from some superficial rust she appeared to have had very little, if any use and had never been seasoned. The shop keeper initially wanted $115 for her however after some haggling he accepted $95.  She was not as inexpensive as some Harding’s have reportedly gone for in recent times, however I reckon she was a reasonable deal just the same and a nice little addition to the collection.
I have since cooked a few meals with her and have found her to be a very fine cooking pot.

I've heard there are some Harding repo/fake's out there doing the rounds and I'm interested in the opinion of some of the Harding gurus on this forum, as to whether my recently acquired 13 incher is the real deal or not.   Smiley

Just to add to the info above, we drove to Ballarat today.  Was a miserable rainy day and probably should have stayed home.

Information provided by the Federation Museum in Ballarat is that the CC Harding & Sons Foundry was situated at 1126 Doveton Street, Ballarat.

In the photo below my car is situated right outside that address.  The whole block now has housing for the aged built right over it.

SJ Im wondering why you think yours could possibly be a repo?
It looks very similar to a 13 inch Harding that I traded another oven for not long ago.
Mine has the Harding writing on the inside of the lid only. The base has no writing at all, but is unmistakable as a Harding.
The one I have appears to be very old as it has some pitting in the base due to neglect over the years. I would suggest that the Harding's with no phone number and marked on the inside of the lid are some of the very early ovens that Hardings made.
Chally would be the man to talk to ...he seems to have the "mother load" of Harding information stored away somewhere.

G'day SB,
Sorry for the late reply.
In answer to your question, l wondered whether it was a fake because it was very inexpensive, it looked new and without any sign of weathering or age. To all intents and purposes it could have easily passed for leaving the factory gate yesterday. To my mind the mint condition of the unit was very unusual considering the time which has elapsed since C C Harding pots were fabricated. Further, there was a rumour going around Central Victoria at the time that a backyard foundry were fabricating fake Harding COs and cashing in on their collectability and popularity, particularly considering that Harding were no longer in business and their ovens were fetching astronomical prices on the secondhand market

Since then l have compared my Harding with  another similar pot which the owners family apparently bought directly from the Harding factory and the two pots match very closely.

I now believe that my beloved 13 incher is a genuine Harding and that l was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time to pick up this model in such good condition and at a very affordable price.  Smiley

Over the years since then I have found the Harding 13incher to be an excellent allrounder and possibly a little more versatile than my 12 inch Billmans, due to the slightly larger diameter and the slightly longer and better quality legs.

Some Hardings have the size on the lid, some don't.

pd

1996 was the year Ballarat changed from 053 to 03 area code I believe.

After reading the blog I dug mine out - it’s a 7” with 053 prefix number followed by 6 numbers to make the phone number. I believe it was about the last to be poured in the ground. The foundry was on the cnr of Armstrong and Doveton st Nth Ballarat and use to play around there as a kid. Uncle lived down the road in Armstrong St.

That is about the most I've seen paid for a 13", shows that they are held in high regard. In my opinion they are about the perfect oven both in size and design, I'm happy to say I have several.

Many years ago, I was managing a small supermarket in Ballarat across the road from  C Harding and Sons Foundry, Bill Harding was  regular and dry witted high point in every day.  Long after the foundry had ceased to operate, I mentioned to Bill (without really knowing the foundry name) , that I was trying to get  Harding camp oven for my dad, who at the time lived a long way from civilization in the Palmer River area in far north Queensland.  Bill said,  have you ever read the sign on my place?   I looked across the road... That's you? He laughed.  A week later he returned with Dad's new camp oven in a box.  He said "I hope he uses it for a long time, it's the last one I will ever make" 3 years ago, dad passed it to my son, who painstakingly cleaned and seasoned it, and uses it once a year on an Easter camping trip with his mates.  Thanks Bill, I miss being stirred up by you every day but your name will live on as long as campfires exist.

Great story Dovo and great memories to have. Bill Harding actually passed away in 1997 and his brother Alan Harding along with his other brother Bob kept the foundry operating until May 1999 when Alan decided to retire. Have you got a photo of the oven to share?

That would be a rare find.
