Well i am in need of a new BBQ plate measuring 480mm x 400mm.

I would like to know your opinions on what to look for. cast iron, stainless or something else. what thickness. where to buy? And any other advice you have to give.

My current one is cast iron. now heavily rusted towards the rear of the plate due to a mistake of mine.

Are you going to be carting it around and are you going to use a wood fire under it???

I would go for a piece of solid steel or cast iron.

Something like 3/8 inch thick steel or even thicker.  Will heat up quick and hold the heat at an even temperature.

Barbecues Galore and Bunnings have lots of varying sizes of cast iron plates that could fit straight in.

ok 3/8 is 9.5 mm, that is nice and thick and should hold heat well

A while back....I found an old 3 legged BBQ....with gas ring and plate for $10...might be worth looking in junk yards

We got a 4 burner BBQ at Bunnings for $50 - because of a little dent in the lid and one plate missing.
$30 for a cast iron plate from their own BBQ aisle which popped in perfectly!

Don't know how thick it is but it has survived all summers cooking, including seasoning camp ovens, and still looks brand new   Smiley Smiley

If you have a scrap metal dealer where you are they normally have cast plates for bbqs very cheap.
