years ago Rick and I went camping with others .....someone used this ...... any ideas how old it would be.or history...... I found couple pics Rick took back then

Looks like a big cast iron Bedourie Camp Oven Cheesy

If you look at the Peke that Astro had then I would say this is also possibly of similar origins and perhaps some sort of traditional cooking pot from the desert regions but made specifically for the Beltana Camel Company and used on their camel safaris.

The Beltana Camel Company is a South Australian property near Beltana where they breed camels. They also ran camel safaris but not sure if they still do.

I have no idea really. Was it manufactured as a cooking utensil or a home made job - I was thinking the latter. One thing is for sure, it would certainly hold some heat.

As said above I have no idea but if home made I thought perhaps the bottom and lid were different size cast iron pipe end caps of some sort??? Probably way off. Grin

Will be interesting to find out.

I think you will find it is a camp oven made from a car or truck rim. I have helped make a couple of them in the past. 14” X 7” rims made very good ovens.
If I ever get some time I will make one again an take a few photos on how to make one.
