Camp Oven Cuisine in Andamooka - 24-Jul-2013
Camp oven cooks will gather in Andamooka in August for the annual cook out.
About 15 different dishes are expected to be prepared by locals in the traditional, camp oven style as part of the fundraiser for the Andamooka Hospital Auxiliary.
Curries, stews, vegies and rice will be prepared in the coals, and deserts of bread and butter pudding, roly poly pudding with custard and cream will also be provided.
Local resident Alan Staffy Heath said all were welcome to attend the popular event.
Weve had over 100 (people)before, My Heath said.
Everyone has a taste of everything and will hopefully go home with a full belly, Mr Heath said.
Locals donate the ingredients for the main meal and prepare the camp oven feast, and the ladies from the auxiliary committee provide the sweets.
Proceeds this year will go towards the recent purchase of a blood analysis machine for the Andamooka Hospital, which cost $11,000. The Andamooka CWA provided $5000 toward the purchase of the machine.
Auxiliary member Jean Lawrie said the CWA had also helped to purchase a new ECG machine for the hospital, due for delivery in coming weeks, which was approximately $6000.
Ms Lawrie said the purchase of the blood analysis machine in particular was a major advantage to the hospital, as it would mean Andamooka locals would no longer need to travel to Roxby Downs for simple blood tests.
Cost of the Camp Oven Cook out is $15 for adults and $5 for children. The event will start at 6pm on Saturday, August 3 and will be held at the Andamooka Historic Cottages.
