A mate is working in the bush down Wanganui way, inland East of New Plymouth in the Whanganui  National Park.
He sent me these images of an old camp oven that he said was abandoned by pre WW1 settlers.
His observation and judgement would be true as he has been around long enough and spent plenty of time in the bush to know which way is up.
Looking at the ears and legs, maybe an old Carron, who would know? Maybe it is enough to stumble upon these remnants that are testament to the struggles, strengths and lives of those who forged a life in the bush and ponder on their struggle in that time and place.

Back when i was 16/17 I spent some time in North Queensland around the Cooktown district wandering around the jungles.  Quite often we would stumble on remains of old gold/tin miners camps.

I can recall seeing all sorts of old pots and pans and didn't even give them a second thought back then.

Imagine there are still some hidden up there as the rainforest reclaims things very quickly.

Most likely some amazing history in some of these old camp ovens.

Great pics there Grump, if we only knew the history of those old ovens and other stuff found in the scrub.

My avatar pic is an old Metters 10" found at an early opal miners camp in SW Qld. several years ago.
As can be seen, the oven had split, bound up and twitched with wire but eventually the bum must have burnt out resulting in the old heave oh!

Those old miners out there sure had tough times, not like today with all weather camps, generators, excavator and dozer, fuel costs, lease, heritage, OH&S, rehabilitation.....oops, did I say the old timers had it tough??

Over the years we have salvaged a mass of old utensils and tools from an inevitable bush demise by rust or simply sinking into the ground.

Looking around my shed, maybe they should have been left there. But then again, I do get much pleasure poking about amongst them, reminiscing, from the light of a couple of old kero lamps Smiley

I heard back from Jason. There nothing obvious to indicate what  foundry this came from. He has estimated it to be about 18" diameter. I think it will be left there for the its' next discovery and more discussion around the camp fire. Huh

I agree Grump, it looks like an old Carron. There certainly was a lot of Carrons in NZ going on how many I have seen come up for sale over there. It actually looks like it would clean up allright if it hasnt got any holes.
