Camel Stew.

3 medium sized camels
1 tonne salt
1 tonne pepper
500 kilos of potatoes
200 kilos of carrots
3000 sprigs of parsley
2 small rabbits.

Cut camels into bite-sized pieces. This should take about two months.
Cut vegetables into cubes (another two months)
Place meat in 5,000 litre corrugated iron water tank and cover with 2,000 litres of brown gravy.
Shovel in pepper and salt to taste.
When meat is tender, add vegetables.
Simmer slowly for 4 weeks.
Garnish with parsley.
Will serve 3800 people.
If more people are expected, add two rabbits.

Been around a while that one.  It is in Jack Absolams book Camp Oven Cooking In The Outback.

Still rates a chuckle though.  Cheesy

That's probably where I got it from Derek.

I actually met Jack and his brother Reg at the Daly River back in the early 80's and in later years I purchased a couple of his books. From what I saw of the pair of them, Reg was the better bush cook or maybe it just seemed that way because he did most of the cooking.

Yep, have heard that Reg was the better cook of the two.  I have a signed copy of the book here somewhere.  Also a book of some of Jack's landscapes.

Recipe was on the back of the seasoning leaflet. You probably chucked it in the bin.

I met Jack 20 odd years ago and he was a terrific bloke. We had a great old chat about the history of the Broken Hill mines and about the lifespans of various outback trees. He is still my favourite landscape artist.

I have some old videos of Jacks where he was travelling around towing a big old caravan.  He did do some cooking in camp ovens on them but nothing in the style that old Reg did for the book.

Should send him an email via his website and ask him if we he wants to come to the COG at Silverton Grin
