Marron season kicked off over here last week. Managed to get out a few times this week but without a great deal of luck. Got 2 undersize in my local spot, which looks like it's suffered a bit from poaching going by the illegal trap I found. Travelled a bit further away from home on Monday night and managed to get 1 sized marron. Back to work tomorrow then I've got next swing off so hoping to do a bigger trip somewhere for a couple of nights

8 for most waters. Trophy waters it's 5. Thinking about heading to Harvey Dam when I'm home next, which is a trophy water and you're only allowed to use a snare, which I've never done

Kangaroo Island SA.has a small population of Marron. Never tried for them but I know they are there.

As for redclaw I have found the best way to cook them is in a camp oven or a skillet with a lid.

Split them in half lengthways and wash the guts out then melt a heap of garlic butter in a hot camp oven or skillet.  Pop in the redclaw flesh side down in the butter, pour over a generous swig of nice dry white wine and put the lid on and allow them to steam in the wine.

Don’t get much better than that.

Decided on the weekend to put a bit of effort into this marron escapade, so parked the car where I got that one the previous week, then hiked a kilometre through dense bush. Found a fantastic stretch of water with a shallow bay for swimming and plenty of deeper sections I figured would hold marron. Or redfin perch. I caught zip. Flicked a lure around for a while in the afternoon and then set the nets about an hour before dark. Got one undersize marron. Starting to lose a bit of faith in my local river. Planning a quick trip to where I got 6 in a night last year as a last gasp effort as the season closes in a week and it's probably cheaper just to buy the things from a farm 
Was my first go at hiking into a campsite and learnt a few things from it. Swags are not hiking beds. Leave the foldup chairs at home (there was plenty of rocks to sit on). Source a bag for the nets. Purchase a smaller cooking device. The effort was all worth it though to find a nearly untouched section of river

A bit late getting this up, but spent 2 nights at a spot I went to last year. Got 6 on night 1 and 7 on night 2. All good size, plenty for a feed in the bush and was able to bring 10 home. Happy days

After that win last week, did a mad dash into the same spot on the last night of the season on Tuesday. Timed the drive at an hour, spent about 2 and a half hours fishing, then home by 11pm with 4 marron. There was plenty of big marron about, but they were easily spooked so had to be pretty stealthy. No jumbos in this lot, all were just over the size limit.
So I was pretty happy with how the season ended for me and have a spot I can hopefully rely on next year.

Should be no reason why they don’t freeze well.  Rock Lobsters freeze well.
